Blackwell flush with city cash
Blackwell flush with city cash
But Cincinnatians open wallets for both candidates
BY JON CRAIG | ENQUIRER COLUMBUS BUREAU
COLUMBUS - For Ken Blackwell, home is where the money is.

The West End native and Republican governor candidate has gotten three times as much money from Greater Cincinnatians as his Democratic rival for the governorship, Ted Strickland.

As Labor Day marks the traditional start of full-fledged campaigning leading to November, an Enquirer analysis of campaign donations since January 2005 finds that:

Contributors in Hamilton, Butler, Clermont and Warren counties have given $1.4 million to Blackwell and just over $400,000 to Strickland.

Nearly 18 percent of Blackwell's contributions have come from Southwest Ohio, compared with less than 5 percent of Strickland's total. The four-county region makes up about 13.5 percent of Ohio's population, according to the latest Census estimates.

The candidates for Ohio governor are approaching a new campaign record, having raised more than $17 million through July. They are expected to smash the 1998 record when Gov. Bob Taft and former Attorney General Lee Fisher spent a combined $18 million.

1. Another mayor endorses Strickland:Democratic candidate already has Cincinn
Another mayor endorses Strickland
Democratic candidate already has Cincinnati nod
BY JOHN MCCARTHY | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

COLUMBUS - Democratic candidate for governor Ted Strickland got another endorsement from a big-city mayor on Friday, snaring Youngstown's Jay Williams, who ran as an independent last year to become boss of the struggling former steel town.

That adds to Strickland's support from the mayors of Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo. Most of the mayors had withheld their backing until Strickland, a U.S. representative with an Appalachian district, assured them he would work to help Ohio's urban areas.

Two weeks ago, Strickland outlined a plan he said would revitalize Ohio's cities. It was formed with input from the state's mayors and includes their ideas on tax credits, investments in urban infrastructure, redeveloping downtowns and other issues, Strickland said.

"This plan was not developed in isolation. One of the reasons it was one of the latest pieces of our Turnaround Ohio Plan was that for a period of months, myself and others on my campaign worked with Ohio's big-city mayors," Strickland said Friday, the day he accepted Williams' endorsement. "I wanted to come up with something that was agreeable to all of them, each of them."

Strickland's plan would redevelop downtown areas by using private investment and federal grants, promote "wireless districts," create tax credits for businesses that develop urban areas and establish an office that would work to repair aging city streets and bridges.

10. Akron's Mayor Plusquellic will also endorse Strickland
He's just been holding out to get Strickland to acknowledge some of the urban/inner-city issues that he'd like to see addressed.

4. We all know it will be unfair. Question is how unfair will it have to be.
If Strickland has a 10% pt lead or better going in, the only way for Blackwell is the voting machines. If it's less than that, the only way for Blackwell is the voting machines, except it won't be so obvious.

9. It probably won't even be close
Strickland's edge has steadily grown over Blackwell since the primaries. The latest Rasmussen poll put Strickland over Blackwell by 25% and other polls have given Strickland at least 15-20% over Blackwell. It seems that the more Ohioans learn about Blackwell, the less they like him, as his "negativity" numbers have steadily grown.

He can't steal this election and not have people up in arms about it, because no one will believe that so many people would suddenly swing his way at the last minute.

6. Just WHO is giving to Blackwell?
The Enquirer included a list of donors; their total so far is $540K.
The (48) individuals listed represent only (22) families or individuals.
The Lindner clan alone has (11) individuals giving a total of $110K.
The term "city cash" used by the reporter is not accurate; many, if not
most of the reich-wing moneybags live in Indian Hill or other enclaves
outside the city; Because I'm an actual Cincinnati resident - about forty
years - I object to our city being considered home to these people.
Remember, Cincinnati voted for Kerry-Edwards by MORE than two-to-one.
My comment may be "picky" about terms and language, but it's insulting
to me personally to be considered a co-resident with such reactionaries.
