Hundreds of troops, backed by warplanes and helicopter gunships, were involved
in the offensive on the area, southwest of Kandahar city, that has been a center
of Taliban resistance.

"The reports we have received from the battle ground says 89 Taliban have been
killed since yesterday," Defense Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi said.

"Three Canadian soldiers have been killed and six wounded in the fighting," he added.

More than 200 Taleban fighters have been killed in a major offensive by Afghan and Nato forces that began on Saturday, Nato says.
Four Canadian soldiers with the Nato-led forces were also killed in Operation Medusa, which is taking place near the city of Kandahar.

On Saturday, a UK reconnaissance plane supporting the offensive crashed, killing all 14 people on board.

Afghanistan is witnessing its bloodiest period since the Taleban fell in 2001.
