Gingrich opposed to U.S. strike on Iran
Gingrich opposed to U.S. strike on Iran

By Ralph Z. Hallow
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
September 1, 2006

ROME
-- Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich this week moved a step further toward casting himself as the conservative alternative to Sen. John McCain in a possible run for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.

In an impromptu speech during a Mediterranean cruise that hosted scores of conservative donors and activists, the Georgia Republican expressed unexpected skepticism about prospects of military intervention to halt Iran's nuclear program.

"I am opposed to a military strike on Iran because I don't think it accomplishes very much in the long run," said Mr. Gingrich, who supported the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and has been a strong defender of Israel.

"I think if this regime is so dangerous that we can't afford to let them have nuclear weapons, we need a strategy to replace the regime," Mr. Gingrich said. "And the first place you start is where Ronald Reagan did in Eastern Europe with a comprehensive strategy that relied on economic, political, diplomatic, information and intelligence" means.

1. He's obviously a cheese-eating surrender money.
We've got to fight them over there, or else we'll fight them here.

2. I'm tired of this guy being treated like an elder statesman.
He's just another disgraced repub who had to resign when he lost too many seats in the house. That and the fact he was about to be exposed for the hypocrisy of hounding Clinton for an affair while having one of his own going on.

4. Because the Repukes are that desperate - they're scraping the bottom
of the pond muck. They want someone who invokes all those fond memories of the St Ronnie days. It's all they've got to run with. :puke:

Don't ask me to explain those fond memories - I sure don't have any, but lots of Republicans AND Democrats do. I'm still thinking they spiked the water supply.

hospital cancer treatments.

Gingrich is just hoping this stuff won't surface again but in a presidential run, don'tya think it would? His ability to connect cause and effect is way out of wack.

He's only trying to get his name back in the headlines. Trying to make his comeback tour. Piss on him, he's a waste of oxygen.

10. The war profiteers are gorging themselves on the treasury
What do they need another war for? They would lose it or start WWIII. The neo-cons have boxed themselves into a no win policy. They need to quit while they are ahead. But these arrogant SOBs believe that they "create reality." Gingrich is trying to offer them a way out. I loathe that AEI POS but he's quite shrewd.

16. Why does anyone care what this shit heel has to say
about anything? Elder statesman my ass. Just one more slimy grafting pol that got his sorry ass run out of washington because he could not keep his snout out of the trough. It does not take a brain box to work out that attacking Iran would be a major fuck up. If the pukes lose in the midterms and Bush knows he is a really ineffective lame duck, watch out for the bombs to fly. He's got nothing to lose.
He really does believe his historic legacy will redeem him. Talk about fantasy.

19. Gingrich scares me
Gingrich scares me. Why ??

He's reasonably bright (1) and a convincing speaker. I heard him speak recently; the ticket was free and I believe in knowing one's enemies. He's able to correctly use multi-syllable words and take control of an audience. He makes jokes and paints himself as a reasonable sort of person, willing to work with others across the political spectrum. Gingrich does, however, tend to offer simplistic solutions to problems or issues -- The Solution™ is the internet, The Solution™ is charter schools, etc. No different than other politicians, of course, but the man does have an advanced degree, and was speaking to an audience of bankers and academics.

You'd think that we should actually welcome any talk of his trying for the presidential nomination. Muddy the waters, perhaps even nominate an unelectable candidate, and all that. No, and this is why I'm scared, he might well win. Yes, the man has enough personal baggage for every passenger on the Titanic. However, Reagan was divorced and remarried, and that didn't seem to bother the right-wingers.

If nothing else, he does seem to be positioning himself for an elder statesman role (as someone here has pointed out), which could be worse than his being elected president (think Cheney !)

(1) Remember that the possession of intelligence and knowledge does not guarantee its wise use.

Newt Gingrich: Iran’s President is the New Hitler

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich says that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is as big a threat to global security as Adolf Hitler was in the 1930's - and he's urging President Bush to do everything possible to overthrow his regime.

"This is 1935 and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is as close to Adolf Hitler as we’ve seen," Gingrich tells Human Events. "We now know who they are," he added. "The question is who we are -- are we Baldwin or Churchill?" - referring to the two British leaders at the time who disagreed over Hitler's intentions.

* * * *

So now, Newt doesn't think it's the highest importance for the United States to remove the closest thing to Adolf Hitler? Flip. Flop. Newt Gingrich.
