3 bombs explode in Baghdad, killing 20
(NOTE: "NEWS ALERT" AT CNN HOMEPAGE SAYS AT LEAST 39 DEAD, 115 WOUNDED)

By REBECCA SANTANA, Associated Press Writer 48 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Three bombs, including one at a popular market, exploded in Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 20 people and wounding another 75 shortly after the country's prime minister said
Iraq was ready to take over responsibility for more territory from coalition authorities.

The U.S. military reported that an American soldier was killed in Anbar province on Wednesday by a bomb blast.

Thursday's attacks came one day after another deadly bombing against a downtown market, part of a violent week that has seen hundreds of Iraqi killed.

Two of Thursday's bombings took place in eastern Baghdad about 10 minutes and 1.5 miles apart. The first was on a street and the second at a market, police Lt. Bilal Ali Majeed said. The casualties were transported to two hospitals, and police said they did not know how many people had been hurt separately in each attack.

Earlier, a suicide car bomber in Baghdad killed two people and a British embassy convoy came under attack. Two passers-by were injured in the attack against the convoy.
