IRS Review Clears NAACP
IRS Review Clears NAACP

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: August 31, 2006
Filed at 11:12 a.m. ET

WASHNGTON (AP) -- The NAACP did not violate the conditions of its tax-exempt status when its chairman gave a speech that criticized President Bush, according to a newly released letter from the Internal Revenue Service to the civil rights group.

The IRS began looking into the Baltimore-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People about a month before the 2004 presidential election after a speech by NAACP Chairman Julian Bond that was largely critical of Bush's policies.

Political campaigning is prohibited under the NAACP's tax-exempt status.

In a letter, dated Aug. 9, the IRS said a review of video footage of the speech, as well as other information, indicated ''that political intervention did not occur.''

2. Sure they go after NAACP, but Focus on the Family
and its dozens of offshoot "Family" 527's gets a pass from the IRS.

If the IRS really wanted to find violations they wouldn't have to look too deep into the Family groups.

4. If Clinton had ever sent the IRS after anyone
Every paper and talking head would have gone balistic. But Bush can get away with using the IRS as a weapon.

8. IRS says NAACP didn't violate tax status
Gee, here's a shocker. :eyes:

WASHINGTON - The NAACP did not violate the conditions of its tax-exempt status when its chairman gave a speech that criticized President Bush, according to a newly released letter from the
Internal Revenue Service to the civil rights group.

The IRS began looking into the Baltimore-based
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People about a month before the 2004 presidential election after a speech by NAACP Chairman Julian Bond that was largely critical of Bush's policies.

Political campaigning is prohibited under the NAACP's tax-exempt status.

In a letter, dated Aug. 9, the IRS said a review of video footage of the speech, as well as other information, indicated "that political intervention did not occur."

NAACP attorneys said the IRS investigation was a "serious threat" to the freedom of nonprofits who may criticize government policies. The group has called the audit a political campaign to silence the organization, a point Bond maintains.

"The information they've given us shows that only Republicans have objected," Bond said.

Documents obtained by the NAACP during the investigation showed at least six Republicans in Congress forwarded letters to the IRS on behalf of their constituents.

10. I heard Julian Bond's speech at the Press Club today on C-Span. WOW!
The man is on fire. You can hear it in his voice, like Al Gore these days. And this fire creates CLARITY OF THOUGHT and PERFECTION OF LANGUAGE in the service of the Truth.

I was very impressed!

Contrast this with the miserable downslide of Andy Young--now a shill for Bush and Wal-Mart. Both men great heroes of the civil rights movement. Julian Bond stayed on the Truth. Andy Young did not, and is mired in confusion and scandal today.

I remember a line from a song we used sing, "I woke up this mornin'/ with my mind/ stayed on freedom..." Beautiful song. Julian Bond wakes up every morning with "his mind/ stayed on freedom." He's still right there, in the march, facing the waterhoses and the bull whips. And Andy Young has forgotten what freedom means.
