Gingrich: Powerful Pelosi 'would be a disaster'
JIM DAVENPORT
Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Ex-U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday that the thought of California Rep. Nancy Pelosi becoming the next leader of the House and being third in line to the presidency is frightening.

"The prospect of her bringing San Francisco values and a whole attitude on foreign policy that is, I think, an attitude of weakness and appeasement and surrender, I think, would be a disaster for the country," the outspoken Republican said.

Gingrich said keeping power out of the hands of Pelosi, the House minority leader, and other Democrats is one of the reasons he was in South Carolina this week raising money for the GOP.

On Wednesday, Gingrich was at a fundraiser for Ralph Norman, the White House's chosen opponent for U.S. Rep. John Spratt, the 5th District Democrat who is Pelosi's assistant minority leader.

To suggest that "any Democrat is for appeasement is ridiculous" and "shows how desperate the Republicans are," Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly said. "We know we have a dangerous world out there," he said, but "fear-mongering is not helpful to the situation."...

Newt Gingrich: No Slack for You
Bump and Update: Arianna thinks we should cut Gingrich some slack and accept his repentence. I understand where she's coming from, but I can't agree. Newt Gingrich was one of the most dangerous men in politics. Don't ever forget his 1995 Contract On America and the Taking Back our Streets Act. He cannot be allowed back into the fray. He will tool us again. We're lucky we got rid of him once. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice.... (sorry about the unintended rhyme.)

Also refusing to cut Gingrich any slack: Jane at Firedoglake, Glenn Greenwald at Alternet, Matt at My DD.

47. "San Francisco" = "Big bad homo" meme goes back to 1984
when the Dems held their convention in The City. Reagan and the repukes jumped all over it, calling Mondale a "San Francisco Democrat". Never mind that Mondale is actually from Minnesota. The red-meat right-wing base knows what "San Francisco" means, and it has nothing to do with cable cars, sourdough, or the Niners (who were actually good then). :grr:

21. "San Francisco values"
Isn't it amazing that the GOP has been able to get away with insulting slivers of the electorate like this? I remember when GWB called John Kerry "just another liberal senator from Massachussets", as though his being from Massachussets somehow makes him less appealing.

I realize that this is a deliberate strategy and is an effective means of scaring "the folks" in the "hinterlands". I just want to know when Americans will stand up and unite against these divisive tactics and those who foist them upon us.

27. "San Francisco values"
Hateful bastard. Nancy really excercises the extremists. Hannity's finally found something he's willing to die for-

Hannity: "aking sure Nancy Pelosi doesn't become the speaker" is "worth ... dying for"
On the August 29 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program, Fox News host Sean Hannity sought to encourage Republican voters and candidates to ensure a Republican victory in the November midterm elections by proclaiming that "there are things in life worth fighting and dying for, and one of 'em is making sure" that House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (CA) "doesn't become the speaker." Hannity then urged his listeners to "gnore the polls, ignore the media, ignore the pundits. It's 70 days to go. The end is not here yet. We still can turn this thing around."

How about some far right Georgia vlues- cheating on your wife and serve her divorce papers while she's in the hospital fighting breast cancer.

Or how about cheating on your next wife with a House staffer, while you and other Republicans were railing on Bill Clinton.

The fact that ANYONE give this man print or airtime just goes to show how little integrity so called "journalists" in the "mainstream" media have these days.
