Pentagon: Iran nuclear-capable in 5 years

WASHINGTON, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Iran is five to eight years from having the capability to build a nuclear weapon, U.S. Defense Department officials tell The Washington Times.

The report came as Iran appeared to be ignoring a U.N. deadline Thursday to cease uranium enrichment.

Sources in the Pentagon told the Times the 5-8 year estimate provides U.S. President George Bush additional time to decide on whether to launch military strikes.

Last week, a bipartisan report from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence chastised the U.S. intelligence community for not devoting sufficient resources to Tehran, and said current intelligence reporting on Iran was too timid.
