Politician promotes work with Nazi slogan

AN Italian politician has used the "work makes you free" slogan that topped the gates at Auschwitz in a brochure to promote local job centres, saying he could not remember the source but was impressed by the quote.

News agency Ansa reported the vice-president of the Jewish community in Rome had sharply criticised Tommaso Coletti, president of Italy's southern Chieti province and member of the centre-left “Daisy” party, for using the quote.

Countless photographs have focused on the “Arbeit macht Frei” sign at Auschwitz to encapsulate the horror of the Nazi death camps.

“Work makes you free. I don't remember where I read this phrase but it was one of those quotes that have an instant impact on you because they tell an immense truth,” Mr Coletti wrote in the pamphlet, Ansa reported.

11. Bush wants us to work for free by allowing illegal immigrants to push
down our wages while abusing them by having them work for next to nothing. Killing two birds with one stone. Getting rid of the middle class and getting slave labor for his fascist friends.

4. If he had issued immediate and profuse apologies, laugh it off...
...but it doesn't seem like he has made any effort to do so.

5. Shocking...
Almost as shocking as US Senators using racial epithets publicly or actual Nazis getting 43% of a primary vote in Alabama.

Ala. Dems: Darby Not Welcome in Party

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Democratic Party leaders want a former candidate for attorney general who denies the Holocaust occurred to stay out of their future primaries.

The party's executive committee passed a resolution Saturday informing Larry Darby that ``he is not welcome in the Alabama Democratic Party.''

...

Darby lost to Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. in the June 6 primary race. He received 43 percent of the vote.

Wonder what Italians and foreigners think of these developments...?

16. Not very much...
but if it was a Democrats only primary, what does that say about the Democrats in Alabama? That's not to smear all Alabama democrats, but that's a significant percentage.

12. This guy seems a bit of a dim bulb.
But he doesn't seem to have meant it intentionally. The story isn't getting any press in Europe. Just some poorly-educated lower level bureaucrat saying something stupid.

14. Auschwitz gate, Arbeit Macht Frei.
I learned this 100 years ago in school. It did stay with me, because it told a chilling truth about the reich wing, that pigs can do this to other human beings. Coletti is about to experience the wrath of the world, and well deserved. Idiot.

I wonder if George has heard that quote somewhere. I hope he tries to use it.

18. Why not the centre-left "Fresh Spring Day" party?
"Daisy" sounds like a brand of panty liners. Fecking marketers.
