Guy in SUV goes crazy- Up to 14 hurt in SF hit-and-run spree
Up to 14 hurt in SF hit-and-run spree
7 critical; driver believed to have struck, killed a man in Fremont earlier
Jaxon Van Derbeken, Steve Rubenstein and Bob Egelko, Chronicle Staff Writer
Tuesday, August 29, 2006

(08-29) 15:20 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- As many as 14 people were injured this afternoon by a motorist who drove around San Francisco running them down before he was arrested, authorities said.

Seven of those injured were in critical condition, police and firefighters said.

Authorities have identified the man who was arrested as Ohmeed Aziz Popal, who has an address in Ceres.

Authorities said they believe Popal was the same driver who ran over a 55-year-old man walking in a bicycle lane in Fremont, at Fremont Boulevard near Ferry Lane, just after noon. That victim died.

Popal was arrested at a Walgreens at Spruce and California streets.

In San Francisco, the attacks began around 1 p.m., but it was unclear in what order:

• Two people, one of them a child, were critically injured around by a sport-utility vehicle on the 3500 block of California Street in the Richmond District.

• Three people were hit at California and Fillmore streets. Witnesses said they included a man with a broken hip and a woman with a gashed head.

• Two people were seriously hurt at Bush and Pierce streets and one person was seriously injured at Bush and Buchanan streets, police said. One person suffered minor injuries in an incident at 1850 Fillmore Street.

• Two other people suffered minor injuries when they were hit at Pine at Divisadero streets, and another two were hit and suffered minor injuries at Divisadero and Bush Street.

"It was like 'Death Race 2000,' " firefighter Danny Bright said at California and Fillmore streets, as an ambulance stood nearby. "Guys were walking down the sidewalk and the guy just came up and ran them over. The guy went crazy.''

2. Holy crap! I have been looking at San Francisco all afternoon.
Right out my window across the Bay and this craziness was going on the whole time.

I am slightly spooked, for some reason.

7. Too bad San Francisco voted to ban guns last year
If they had a right to carry law someone could have stopped this nut.

10. no guns in SF an overall good thing
Given how badly tourist navigate our narrow
windy streets and the general tension of living
in a dense diverse city, I think we would have
a lot more than 14 injured people to deal with
if everyone was running around the city with firearms.

Stopping a runaway driver like that just wouldn't work like it does in the movies. It's hard to say if someone could take out a driver who's wildly changing directions without hitting civilians in the process. The only safe way to stop him would be when the car is standing, and not when it's barreling along at high speed.

22. It's very hard to hit somebody with a pistol through a car windshield.
Never mind a moving car while people all around are screaming and running for cover.

If they had a right to carry law, someone might have taken a shot, but that's extremely far from a garuntee that someone would have succeeded.

20. Leslie Neilson, in one of the Scary Movie series.
That's the line he used after running over the aliens. It was right after the farmer's market tragedy... the driver in that had made that excuse. A very dark and edgy joke that hardly anyone in the theater understood.

on traffic related charges in Stanislaus County (Turlock, CA), according to the Stanislaus County Superior Court website.

Just guessing, but from a google search of his name (Omeed Aziz Popal), it looks like he might be Afghani or of Afghani descent. Perhaps he felt like it was pay-back time for what the U.S. has been doing to the Afghanis.

21. It is terrorism
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 12:40 AM by 951-Riverside
The victims and witnesses were terrorized but will the government treat it as a terrorist attack? NO

Seems they only recognize acts of terror that they create... errr... I mean that Al Qaeda takes responsibility for. Almost every week various iraqi (non Al Qaeda) groups release video of attacks on US personnel on the internet but you NEVER see or hear mention of these videos from our media or government.

Ohmeed Aziz Popal is as much of terrorist as Theodore Kaczynski, Hessan Mohammad Hadayat, Timothy McVeigh and Naveed Afzal Haq.
