US attorney general discusses interrogation tactics in Iraq
by Jay Deshmukh

BAGHDAD (AFP) - US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales met Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh and discussed the tactics used by Iraqi security forces to combat a wave of violence, including torture.

"It is a somewhat difficult decision as to where to draw the line," Gonzales said, referring to possible measures that Iraqi police might use to extract information from suspected insurgents and death squad leaders.

"It is difficult to decide what is appropriate and what is allowed under law," said Gonzales, who has drawn criticism in the past for describing the Geneva Conventions against prisoner abuse as "quaint".

Gonzales, who arrived in Baghdad Tuesday, told reporters the issue of interrogation tactics came up during his meeting with Saleh but said the techniques to be used were a decision for the Iraqi government.

But he stressed that the US government was against any kind of torture.

"Our President is very clear that government does not engage in torture. The US is not engaging in torture. We are part of a convention against torture."

9. Good news, Ali, today we have, all the way from the United States...
A SPECIAL GUEST TORTURER!!! Can't believe your luck, eh? Don't worry, what he is going to do to you is not really torture, unless you're one of those milquetoasts who can't stand a little genital electrifying.

3. So, Alberto?
The US does not use torture? Except when we do use torture?
We are a part of a convention against torture? Except when we don't want to be a part of that convention?

Oh, I get it. It's one of those Rule of Law things. Basis of our civilization, except when we don't want it to be.

8. Does this mean
that all of the pictures we've seen about the atrocities at Abu Ghraib were the results of being treated well? I know that Bush is crazy, but resent the implication that we are crazy enough to believe any member of his administration, especially a creepy one like the AG. Being given good treatment does not result in blood, maiming, and death.

As far as the convention against torture, why did Chimp issue a signing statement on the law forbidding torture, but not, of course if Bush decided that he could order it done anyway.
