Angry Lebanese boo Annan
UN chief Kofi Annan was booed by a crowd chanting pro-Hezbollah slogans on Monday as he toured Beirut's southern suburbs devastated by Israel's war against the Shiite militant group.

Dozens of men, women and children angrily waved pictures of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and shouted "Allah, Nasrallah and all of the suburbs" as the UN secretary general emerged from his car to survey the destruction in the heart of the Haret Hreik area, a Hezbollah stronghold.

----

Annan was accompanied by Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora, Foreign Minister Fawzi Sallukh as well as Hezbollah MPs.

His visit lasted barely 10 minutes as nervous security officers whisked him quickly out of the area.

2. How dare he insist they not commit war crimes!
How dare he ask for them to give the two Israeli soldiers they kidnapped - which started this whole war - back.

3. How about the thousands of Palestinian and Lebanese citizens
kidnapped by the IDF in the middle of the night -- in Israeli dungeons because the Arabs can't invade and occupy Israel to get THEIR people back?

7. I would tend to agree with this
The way the UN sat on their collective arses (was manipulated into doing so by the u.s. ?) to give israel enough time to do their thing in Lebanon, had me feeling the same way towards the UN as the freepers do.

Lebanon got trashed and so did the reputation of the UN.

8. This Lebanon debacle
rather showed the UN up for what it really is, a complete waste of space. (Now I'm sounding like John Bolton. Puke)

In the past I've wanted the UN to show some sense and stand up to the bush* juanta, but I just don't think they have what it takes.

Better to conserve your energies and try to persuade those people who might actually do something.

9. The UN has been no good friend to Lebanon.
Lot's of meddling, damn little real help.
That seems quite clear.

12. Annan is a joke
The UN kept the resolution for cease-fire for as long as to help Israel bomb Lebanon into the ground. When the Isreali tanks started burning and Hezbollah put up a reasonable fight, it was the isreali's politicians turn to run to UN to request peace. Otherwise we might have been witnesses to yet another Middle East misadventure.
Something tells me this is not the last Lebanon-Israel war. We will hear more news from that place soon.

10. I would think the UN expected this kind of reaction.
They did very little to protect them from Israel or stop this war and they should be called on that.

This woman said it best (from the same article):

"Isn't he (Annan) ashamed of what happened to us?" said one of the women who would only give her name as Ihsan. "He's as powerless as the rest of them to stop Israel's aggression."

11. This was an orchestrated show of defiance.
Hezbollah has gained the upper hand in Lebanon and
they don't intend to yield. They may not want another
fight with Israel, but don't expect Lebanon or the
the international troops to disarm them anytime soon.
