Skinheads attack 2 Israelis in Belgrade

Two Israeli citizens were severely beaten by a group of skinheads in a Belgrade park in what Jewish leaders here described Tuesday as an anti-Semitic attack.

The two - Jariv Avram, 27, and Bojana Petkovic, 23 - were attacked late Sunday during a rock music festival in a downtown park by several men wearing Nazi symbols, police said.

Avram suffered serious head injuries, while Petkovic was bruised, the two Israelis told Belgrade media.

"They were chanting 'Auschwitz, Auschwitz' and 'Go to Germany' as they attacked us," Avram said, adding police did nothing to protect them.

Anti-Semitic attacker in police custody

BELGRADE -- A US citizen has reported to the police claiming he was responsible for the anti-Semitic incident in Belgrade.

The police say the US citizen of Serbian origins told them he had reported to the police since in his words, his conscience does not allow him for the event to be blown out of proportion, since he “did not beat, but hit Yariv Avram”, after Avram allegedly pinched him. The unidentified US citizen will be charged for causing light bodily harm.

Bojana Petković and Yariv Avram were beaten by the hooligans wearing Nazi t-shirts and singing Nazi songs. What is even more worrying is the fact the police present at the concert held at Belgrade’s Tašmajdan stadium have so far done nothing to locate the perpetrators.

Attending a concert in the capital might prove to be dangerous for foreigners, Israeli citizens in particular. The two Israelis have experienced precisely this when they attended a Tašmajdan concert after spending, in their words, two wonderful weeks in Serbia.

I wouldn't pretend to know or venture to guess. Just saying, I must wonder why they'd be ID'd as Israeli citizens or simply Jews when the attack was made. It's not like they wear ID papers on their jackets, right?

It is the rule of law that keeps a country civilized, not the enforcers of those laws. When the politicians and the cops stop following the rule of law themselves, that's when things start to go to hell.
