Endorsing Lamont, union says Lieberman hurting Democrats
KEN DIXON dixon.connpost@snet.net

HARTFORD — The Service Employees International Union on Monday endorsed Democratic nominee Ned Lamont in November's U.S. Senate election, warning that incumbent Joe Lieberman's independent candidacy threatens other Democrats.

The endorsement, announced at a news conference outside the state Capitol, means Lamont will have the backing of 55,000 SEIU members in the state, including 13,000 dues-paying retirees, union leaders said.

Union officials said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr., who is seeking to unseat Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell, and Democratic congressional challengers will be hurt by Lieberman's spot as a petitioning candidate. Lieberman draws much of his support from Republican voters, and critics are worried his candidacy will draw GOP partisans to the polls.

But DeStefano, who appeared with Lamont during the event, believes the Senate race, which has attracted international attention, will probably mean more Democrats will go to the polls on Nov. 7, giving him a better shot at upsetting the Republican governor.

3. Frankly I think when a man changes party like this it is about ego
I do not care if any of them do it but it should be after they get out of the term and then re-run in the other party if that is what they wish to do. People vote for them as they think they are going to vote in such a way and when they change it is only fair to those who vote for them. Gramm of Tex. did just that. I wish the man from Vt. Had also done that. I can understand what they are saying and it is OK with me that they believe any way they like but they ran on one thing which their voters wanted so that is what they should do for their base. Joe would most likely vote for the union which is the hard part of this. The war thing is his real problem.

4. I saw Lieberman hugging a republican last night
After hearing that he was hurting the Democrat's chances of winning, Lieberman said something like, "They should have thought of that when they voted against me." Then he hugged a republican.

His supporters are republicans. They think he is "it" a national treasure. He is Fool's gold, if you ask me.

Joe being loved by republicans makes me proud the Democrats voted against him. Win or lose.

16. I don't know who it was he hugged.
It was sometime during the night, Monday night. He did say that and he did hug a republican. I think he was someone from the republican party. I am pretty sure it was NOT Clay Shaw. Joe was grinning like a sh-t eating dog after he said what he said. But I haven't seen it since. Sometimes the news will show something once, but then it disappears. They cover up crap like a cat does.

I will watch for it and post if it comes on again. We need a copy of that for sure. It was probably on Fox, but could have been on CNN.

A Union Boost For Lamont, DeStefano
August 29, 2006
By CHRISTOPHER KEATING And MARK PAZNIOKAS, Courant Staff Writers

In their first joint appearance since a Democratic "unity" event following their primary victories three weeks ago, Ned Lamont and John DeStefano were surrounded Monday by union workers as they picked up endorsements from the Service Employees International Union.

The endorsement by 55,000 union members and retirees was the largest yet for Lamont, who defeated Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman in the Democratic primary and is facing him in a rematch on Nov. 7. The union had endorsed DeStefano in his gubernatorial primary and offered its re-endorsement for the general election.

The union support came on a day when a new Zogby International poll showed DeStefano trailing Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell by 17 percentage points - a far closer margin than the 32-point spread shown recently by the Quinnipiac University poll.

The Zogby poll also showed Lieberman leading Lamont by 10 percentage points, which was close to the Quinnipiac results, which had Lieberman ahead by 12 points among likely voters. The Zogby poll showed only 2 percent for Republican Alan Schlesinger, whose embattled campaign has failed to gain support from Rell and President Bush.

20. I found more on the Lieberman statement
Edited on Wed Aug-30-06 09:33 PM by MysteryToMyself
Yesterday morning, I tried to find a transcript or a newsclip of Joe saying "They should have thought of that during the primary." I couldn't even find it on FoxNews. I was beginning to think I had dreamed it.

Then, a few minutes ago, I found it on the Daily Kos. Kos posted about Joe saying that. Kos didn't mention him hugging a republican afterwards, but it was in then same segment right after the awful statement. Anyway, they think Joe's statement was awful and if you really think about it, it is awful.

21. Here is a link to a utube of Lieberman's remark and hugging a republican
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 08:31 AM by MysteryToMyself

http://www.firedoglake.com/2006/08/30/party-of-one-big-ego/

There it is, a movie of Joe being asked if he was hurting the democrats, then Joe saying "They should have thought of that during the primary." Later it shows Joe hugging a republican.

If it was a prison, I would have to ask, "Who is Joe's daddy?"
