KENNEBUNKPORT President Bush upheld his reputation as a high-energy vacationer Friday, a day when the commander in chief both ventured out with his mountain bicycle and got in some saltwater fishing before lunch.
Meanwhile, organizers of a protest march planned today said they also stayed busy, fielding phone calls from across the nation and making final preparations for a rally expected to draw hundreds of people.
But the president might have gotten an earlier start. His motorcade departed Walker's Point at 7 a.m. in a light rain and drove out to the Massabesic Experimental Forest, a 3,600-acre tract of federally owned land in Alfred and Lyman. Apparently the president went for a bicycle ride. A bulletin from the press pool that follows the president said the motorcade was carrying bicycle equipment, but reporters were not allowed to follow the president into the forest.
About 11 a.m., the president made another expedition from Walker's Point, this time aboard the family boat, the Fidelity III. Equipped with three 275-horsepower outboard motors, the boat is known as one of the speediest on the coast. Michael Dee of Windham, who for the last two days has stood on Ocean Avenue near the Bush compound with a sign advocating the legalization of marijuana, said the president didn't hold back on the throttle as he headed out.
