Spanish councillors suspected of covering up torture

Madrid - Two Spanish city councillors are suspected of collaborating with police officers accused of torturing detainees in the southern tourist resort of Torrevieja, press reports said Friday.

The councillors responsible for health and security were interrogated on Thursday. Both were reportedly indicted, one of them on charges of falsifying reports on injuries sustained by detainees.

At least 14 police officers, including police chief Alejandro Morer, have been questioned in connection with the case.

Some of the officers are suspected of beating detainees including an Algerian immigrant and a Guatemalan man who had three broken ribs. Others, including Morer, are suspected of covering up the torture.
