1. Bomb threat, hoax?
US-Irish flight in security alert
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/5284926.stm

Passengers on a flight from the US to Ireland have been questioned by police after a bomb threat was made against the aircraft, Irish officials said.

The aircraft landed at Shannon airport in south-west Ireland just before 0700 GMT, and passengers and their luggage were taken for a security inspection.

The alert came after Irish police received a telephone call saying there were explosives on the plane.

The passengers were cleared and allowed to continue their journey.

4. Terrorists never have to actually do anything anymore.
A simple Boo! is sufficient. From anyone. Reminds me of old cartoons with women standing on chairs because someone said "Mouse!"

6. Another cartoon depicted a flyer calling out to the pilot "(Hi Jack)
while entering the plane.

Most all pilots were referred to as "Smiling Jack" -WWII comic books

2. The frequency with which this is now occuring
Edited on Fri Aug-25-06 05:03 AM by edwardlindy
may soon put a stop to the media even bothering to report it. At least on this occasion there's been no mention of anyone being guilty of "travelling while Asian"

Fuller details here now : http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5284926.stm

3. This flight was from JFK...
I'd strongly suggest this was a hoax. Some bollix either in NY or Ireland probably half cut thought this would be great "craic"....

5. Irish airport security deadly serious; extremely thorough & professional
They went through EVERYONE'S carryon luggage with a fine tooth comb when I left Dublin last June. . And though the Irish are typically friendly and talkative to visitors, there was not a smile or single syllable of small talk in the security line. A friend flew from Shannon to Dublin to New York the same week. When the plane landed in Dublin to load more passengers, security came on board, took every piece of carryon from the overhead compartments, matched them up with people remaining on board and searched the luggage again.

And this was well before the recent alarms in London. After decades of NRA violence, the Irish don't consider bomb hoaxes as "craic" and they don't kid around about it. It may well have been a hoax, but "craic" refers to good fun, great company, often mixed with music/alcohol.

9. Divernan, please don't lecture me on the security procedures
at either Dublin or Shannon. I've been through both airports many, many times in the past 26 years. I know how serious the security procedures are taken at both.

You took my post entirely the wrong way. What I was inferring was this: that IMO this was a hoax call, probably made by some half inebriated a**hole either in NY or Ireland, that because of their state of mind or because they might have known someone on this particular flight, thought that something like this would be ha-ha funny.

As for bomb threats, my husband was born, raised and lived in Northern Ireland until 1979. Also as I lived there during the 90's, I know how seriously these threats are taken... I am assuming that you were trying to refer to the IRA, not the NRA and also let me remind you that the IRA are not the only people in Ireland that "do" bomb threats....

8. This is the equivalent of continually raising the threat level
Before the last election. Then as soon as the election was over, the threat was somehow gone also. It's very interesting.
