Shays calls for hearings on Iraq

One of the staunchest supporters of the war in Iraq has called hearings to set a potential time line for handing the country over to Iraqis.

U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-4th Dist., the chairman of a House national security subcommittee, still opposes immediately leaving Iraq, as some Congressional Democrats have proposed. But he said Americans need answers.

"The American people are reaching out to their elected officials to help them figure out that this isn’t an open checkbook for the Iraqis to draw from," Shays while in London today, speaking to reporters in a conference call.

Shays said the Congressional hearings are set for Sept. 11, 13 and 15 and will be titled, "Iraq: Democracy or Civil War." Iraqis will testify at the hearing, as well as military officers and other experts to provide members with a better idea of the consequences if U.S. troops leave too early or if they stay too long.

6. "open checkbook for the Iraqis to draw from"
Iraqis as welfare queens seems to be the Repuke rats' new stategery to avoid going down with the ship.

And, of course, the majority of Americans are probably stupid, greedy and arrogant enough that it will probably work.

7. Now the Pukes can say they had a hearing and found no evidence
of a civil war in Iraq. Case closed. People must stop calling it a civil war.

8. Shays calls for troop withdrawal time frame
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14513656/

WASHINGTON - Rep. Christopher Shays, a Connecticut Republican defending his seat from an anti-war challenger, says the U.S. should consider setting a timeline for troop withdrawals from Iraq.

Shays, long a supporter of the war and previously an opponent of withdrawal timetables, said he hopes to offer a specific time frame after he holds congressional hearings on Iraq next month. Few other congressional Republicans have supported setting a timeline.
