Army Turns Away Gay Man

An openly gay Oklahoma man tried to enlist in the Army on Wednesday but was turned away because of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Cich's enlistment attempt was part of the "Right to Serve" campaign organized by the Minneapolis youth office of Soulforce, a national organization supporting gay rights. The campaign is designed to challenge the military's 12-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy on sexual orientation.

People in at least 30 cities are participating. So far, all have been treated with respect but turned away, said national organizer Haven Herrin of Minneapolis.

His family has a history of military service, and Cich said he would serve, too, but not if he has to live a lie and live in fear of being discovered and discharged.
