Former Giuliani Aide Is Found Strangled at Home, Police Say

By EMILY VASQUEZ
Published: August 24, 2006

A former deputy press secretary to Rudolph W. Giuliani was found strangled in his Greenwich Village apartment Monday night, and investigators believe that he may have known his killer, the police said yesterday.

The victim, Martin Barreto, 48, a partner in a Manhattan-based public relations firm, was found naked in his bedroom when officers entered his apartment on East 10th Street at University Place.

A friend of Mr. Barreto’s, unable to reach him by phone, had become alarmed and had gone to his building to ask the superintendent to let him in the apartment. The police were called about 9:20 p.m., and the door was opened after they arrived.

There was no sign of forced entry, struggle or disarray in the apartment, which is owned by Mr. Barreto’s cousin and the cousin’s wife, the police said. The apartment door was locked and no keys were missing, they said.

48. Re: Perhaps he remebered something about the time ...
Guiliani was reportedly advised by the special drill team camped out in Lower Manhattan since the night before to evacuate the area of the WTC towers very shortly before their collapse.

It's a shame more people weren't made aware of the apparent foreknowledge that the near-gravity-speed collapses were imminent (for them to be able to advise the mayor regarding his own personal safety).

Those guys were such a crackerjack rescue team that they could even call the structural load conditions to the better of the dumby FDNY guys who assumed they weren't dealing with a planned demolition and so foolishly proceded to extinguish the minor fires on the upper floors.

Just a thought.

they tell something on the news one time and then it disappears forever.

I remember hearing that Rudy had given some of the worker's retirement funds to some of the businesses during the 911 debacle.

Maybe she knew this...or something else.

3. Autoerotic asphyxiation... some people say....
Autoerotic asphyxiation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Autoerotic asphyxiation, or AEA, is the practice of self-strangulation, typically by the use of a ligature, while masturbating in order to heighten the sexual pleasure as more endorphines are produced when the body reaches the near state of asphyxia. While highly pleasurable, AEA is also an extremely dangerous practice that results in many accidental deaths each year. A small number of people doing AEA use a plastic bag over their head, but most prefer the strangulation method.

Historically, the practice of autoerotic asphyxiation has been documented since the early 1600's. It was first used as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and impotency. The idea for this most likely came from subjects who were executed by hanging. Observers at public hangings noted male victims developed an erection (priapism) and occasionally ejaculated when being hanged. Notably, however, ejaculation occurs in hanging victims after death because of disseminated muscle relaxation; this is a different mechanism from that sought by AEA practitioners.

Deaths often occur when the loss of consciousness caused by partial asphyxia leads to loss of control over the means of strangulation, resulting in continued asphyxia and death. Victims are often found to have rigged some sort of "rescue mechanism" which has not worked in the way they anticipated as they lost consciousness.

It has also been speculated that in some cases autoerotic asphyxiation may have triggered the little-known phenomenon of carotid sinus reflex death.

8. unlikely in this instance, it would appear
The police said the building’s doorman told investigators that he saw Mr. Barreto sometime after midnight on Monday morning. Shortly thereafter, the police said, the doorman let one or maybe two men into the building to visit Mr. Barreto, who had left instructions that he was expecting company.

Investigators said they had not yet interviewed the visitors.

Mr. Barreto’s body was found wedged between his bed and the wall, the police said. They said Mr. Barreto’s larynx had been crushed, an indication that he may have been strangled from behind.

22. Took a class from a coroner once, interesting stuff, text book
Guy were talked about in the text book, found drowned, tied up in an odd way. Turns out had tied himslef up, in an odd way, on the edge of a stream, jerking around managed to fall into stream and drown. There was some movie a while back (from a Grisham book? Clancy????) about a woman who was killed on pupose by someone, wrong person thought he had killed her during sex (bag over head). Anyway, odd things happen sometimes and this qualifies in my opinion. Too bad.

7. wonder if he's ever talked to Wayne Barrett or Dan Collins?
Tarnishing the aura of Giuliani on 9/11
August 23, 2006

http://www.newsday.com/news/columnists/ny-nyhen0823,0,6645642.column?coll=ny-news-columnists

..."Grand Illusion," the book is called. "The Untold Story of Rudy Giuliani and 9/11." It is written by Wayne Barrett of the Village Voice and Dan Collins of CBS.com, two of New York's shrewdest investigative reporters. Published this week by HarperCollins, "Grand Illusion" will forever alter how the world sees Rudy Giuliani's place in America's deadliest terror attacks. You can bet national political reporters will be combing though these chapters as the 2008 presidential campaign season revs up.

With dozens of exclusive and previously unreleased interviews, Barrett and Collins show how the ambitious ex-mayor has spent recent years revising his own truth of 9/11 -- and profiting handsomely from it. Casting himself as a prescient terror hawk whowisely prepared his city for the inevitable, Giuliani in fact ignored repeated warnings from the experts, including his own commissioners and aides.

Instead of confronting the looming danger, they tell how he grew increasingly distracted by pet projects, political turf wars and an extraordinarily messy personal life.

Slowly, the little decisions added up...

42. ding ding ding..you win the award...
and remember who "cleaned up " the American Media Boca Raton, Florida newspaper building that the anthrax killed workers....

http://archives.cnn.com/2001/HEALTH/10/08/florida.anthrax.case/index.html

Robert Stevens, 63, died Friday of inhalation of anthrax. He was a photo editor at The Sun, a supermarket tabloid published by AMI, which employs about 300 people. Traces of anthrax were found in his work station, according to both Agwunobi and AMI's chief executive, David Pecker.

Stevens lived about a mile from an air strip where Mohamed Atta, a suspected hijacker in the September 11 terrorist attacks, rented planes. AMI's offices are several miles from the strip.

snip:

Stevens fell ill after a recent trip to North Carolina, but a Florida state epidemiologist said he did not believe Stevens contracted the disease during his trip. The incubation period for anthrax is between six and 45 days, a period which would not have included his trip.

As photo editor, Stevens worked on a number of stories but did not leave the building, officials said.

Giuliani Firm Anthrax Work Ends in a Feud

By JOSH GERSTEIN - Staff Reporter of the Sun
November 29, 2005

snip:

Boca Raton's mayor, Steven Abrams, boasted to local residents that, in terms of the building's tenants, the city was trading up. "It used to be home of the National Enquirer and now it's the home of a national hero," Mr. Abrams said last fall as he and Mr. Giuliani campaigned for President Bush.

Now, more than 16 months after Bio-One declared that the offices were anthrax free, there are no plans for the firm, or Mr. Giuliani, to return to the site. In fact, the building remains closed and under quarantine.

Mr. Giuliani's firm stopped work after its contract with the building's owner expired in May. The owner hired a rival decontamination company, Marcor Remediation Incorporated, which began work at the three-story office complex yesterday, a spokesman for the Palm Beach County health department, Timothy O'Connor, said.

snip:

However, the ensuing contract dispute, and the fact that Bio-One has never been paid for its efforts, could contribute to questions about Mr. Giuliani's management of his business endeavors since leaving office at the end of 2001. If Mr. Giuliani goes ahead with a possible bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, his business ventures, which are far flung and include legal and consulting work, are likely to come under increased scrutiny. Already, he has drawn critical press attention for his consulting work on anti-crime initiatives in Mexico City and his ties to a for-profit vocational college in Kentucky that recently shut down due to financial difficulties.

seems ole Rudy shows up when things go wrong ( i.e. terror) and when he can make a profit to clean it up...eh??
