Gov't not to use force to clear Mexico City demonstration

Gov't not to use force to clear Mexico City demonstration

The Mexican government said Wednesday it would not use force to clear the blockade set up by left-wingers in central Mexico City to protest an alleged fraud in the country's July 2 presidential elections.

Since July 30, supporters of left-wing presidential candidate Andrez Manuel Lopez Obrador have been blocking important streets in the city -- Juarez, Reforma and Madero Avenues and the Zocalo central square -- pressing for a recount.

The official results, published a week after the vote, gave right-wing candidate, Felipe Calderon of the incumbent National Action Party, a slender 0.58 percentage point more than Lopez Obrador.

"I trust the words of City Mayor Alejandro Encinas," presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar told reporters at Wednesday's press conference.

3. Important to read the rest of this article (it's short)...

(who Encinas is, what he said; and what Fox is going to do next...)

"Encinas, from Lopez Obrador's Revolutionary Democratic Party, had said he would negotiate with the protesters to make them leave.

"On Monday, the first day back in school for around 25 million Mexican schoolchildren, the demonstrators unblocked the main crossroads on the avenues they are occupying.

"Aguilar said that Mexican President Vicente Fox is determined to give the famous "cry of independence," known as the Grito (shout), in the Zocalo on Sept. 15: a yearly ritual recalling the shout that began the country's 1810 independence struggle.

"He also said that Fox intends to lead a military parade 'as scheduled' through the streets that are currently being occupied by protesters."

-----------------------------------------

1. Fox DOESN'T trust Encinas. The protesters are being accommodating to ordinary people (re schools opening) but...

2. ...they are NOT going to leave. Did you see that photo of their huge tent city?...the tents span the streets...

3. Fox is going to lead a military parade through the SAME streets? And what kind of people is a military parade going to attract? This could be a scheme to sick thugs on the protesters. Or possibly something similar to the Oaxaca raid on striking teachers in the middle of the night (teachers were camping out) to evict the protesters before the military parade. How can they hold their military parade in the same streets? It's not possible.

5. More of the brilliance you've come to expect from Rick Perry:

Perry causes a stir calling Calderon Mexico's 'president-elect'Associated Press

AUSTIN - Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a stir at the Border Governors Conference on Thursday when he called Felipe Calderon the president-elect of Mexico and said he had spoken with him that morning.

The conservative candidate holds a narrow lead in Mexico's still-disputed presidential race. Official tallies of the July 2 elections show him ahead by a margin of less than 1 percent. His opponent, leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has claimed fraud and rallied street protests in the capital.

The election is now in the hands of the Federal Electoral Tribunal, which has until Sept. 6 to declare a president-elect or annul the vote.

After Perry made the statement at the conference's opening ceremony, a reporter from Mexico asked him whether his call indicated that he recognized Calderon as the winner.

"When we have an election in the United States and the individual who gets the most votes, we refer to them as the president elect," Perry said.
