(State Sen.)Buttars insists his radio remarks were not motivated by racism
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 07:48 PM by deadparrot
State Sen. Chris Buttars says his criticism of a landmark court case that ended state-sanctioned segregation is not motivated by racism.

Instead, Buttars argues Brown v. Board of Education - the seminal Supreme Court case that forced desegregation of the nation's schools - had mixed results.

"I don't think there's a racial bone in my body," Buttars said in an interview on radio station KCPW Tuesday. "I don't see black and white. I see people. I always have."

That's a more nuanced answer than Buttars provided Monday during an interview with a reporter for Logan radio station KVNU.

1. A bigot is a bigot is a bigot
Buttars, who co-sponsored Utah's gay marriage ban, demanded an example. "I don't understand that at all. I don't know of an example where the minority is being jeopardized by legislative action," he said.

I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked! :sarcasm:

6. They just cannot help themselves.
They are racist, bigoted right-wing freaks. They have spent a long time hiding these facts. Now that they face the real possibility that they will be turned out of office, they are under stress and people under stress often forget the lies they have been telling.

They are tearing off their carefully-crafted veneers and the real ugliness inside is showing.

Evolution lacks fossil link
By D. Chris Buttars

The campaign to eliminate God from the public forum has been going on for decades, having accelerated greatly since the Supreme Court's ill-advised decision in 1963 to eliminate prayer from public schools. And I believe those fighting against the teaching of intelligent design in schools have an ulterior motive to eliminate references to God from the entire public forum ...

Utah State Sen. D. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, is active on the evolution-education issue. http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editorials/2005-08-08-oppose_x.htm

Utah lawmaker seeks to ban gay-straight clubs

Backed by the Utah Eagle Forum, state senator Chris Buttars plans legislation to ban high school gay-straight clubs. "I'm concerned about gay clubs," the West Jordan Republican said Wednesday, a day after opening a bill file for the legislation he said would ban the gay student associations from meeting on public school property. "In my mind, if you are in the chess club, what do you talk about? Chess," Buttars said. "If you are in the dance club, what do you talk about? Dance. If you are in a gay club, what do you talk about? I just don't believe members of sexual-orientation clubs should be sanctioned by the public schools—what they are talking about even a part of the public schools. They should not be allowed to have that on school property at all. It's just wrong" ... The first Gay-Straight Alliance club in Utah was started in 1995 at East High School. In order to ban the club and still comply with the federal law, the Salt Lake City Board of Education eliminated all noncurriculum clubs ... http://www.advocate.com/news_detail_ektid23436.asp
