Lieberman Warns of Danger of the U.S. Pulling Out of Iraq

HARTFORD, Aug 22 — Suggesting that he sees parallels between the war in Iraq and the early struggle against fascism, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman said on Tuesday that the United States would create a dangerous world if it left Iraq too soon.

“Iraq has now become what everyone thinks it was before, another battlefield in this war with Islamic terrorists, and we’ve got to end it with a victory,” Mr. Lieberman said during an interview with the nationally syndicated conservative radio talk show host Glenn Beck on Tuesday.

In the 15-minute interview, Mr. Lieberman warned against the United States becoming isolationist, and he seemed to agree with Mr. Beck’s repeated statements suggesting that the war against Islamic terrorists represented the brink of an international war.

...

“If we walk away, then the Iranians will — as sure as I am talking to you — surge into Iraq, certainly take over the south and the oil that’s there,” he said. “We’ll be paying six or seven bucks a gallon. And that’ll just be the tip of it. I mean, there’ll be instability and war throughout the Middle East. We’ve got to wake up to this. It is the test, unfortunately, of not just this generation of American leaders, but of the next generation as well, because this enemy ain’t going away.”

3. I'm glad he said that
If Iraq is the issue in the Senate race then Lamont wins. The war is very unpopular in CT among Democrats, Independents and a few Republicans. Make it all about the war, go ahead.

8. That man is so full of fear
sad

At least I hear a lot of underlying fear in his words.

That said...Mister Lieberman? Just to let you know...saying we have to continue our criminal occupation of Iraq because gas will cost 6-7 bucks a gallon if don't is incredibly mercenary on your part.

9. What astounding ignorance
Lieberman shows he has no absolutely no understanding of either geopolitics or the oil economy.

And he totally misunderstands the cause of "instability and war in the Middle East".

Hint: It ain't Iran.

... all of the prognosticators know exactly what will happen if we leave Iraq.

The ability of foretelling the future is veerrrrry useful! I must ask Joe what the stock market will be doing next month, so I can plan accordingly.

15. The entire LIEberman-Cheney paradigm is nonsensical
They still want to believe the Disneyesque script...that the nice villagers were all held in captivity by an EVIIIIIL dictator until the superhero, George W. Bush, in flightsuit, came and rescued them. When the superhero tried to set up a system that was fair to all, more EVILDOERS invaded and tried to stop the nice people from getting along. These are the same EVILDOERS who flew the airplanes into buildings. They didn't want the little girls to go to school. They are the BAD people. We can't leave now because then the nice people will be helpless and the wicked stepmother...or something...will re-assert her authority. Oooops! I'm confused! Condiiiiiiii!

17. And with the Greens stepping in conveniently to hurt Ned Lamont after
the primary just shows their repug arrogance and blatant
audasity which once again they have earned their status of
shitdisturber.

Ned Lamont is more "green" than any green stepping forward.

19. But Iran already controls Iraq -- politically
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 11:20 AM by Barrett808
They've no need to invade. They're building a freaking pipeline and they're refining Iraqi oil. They're devoting billions of dollars in reconstruction aid.

Ignorance or mendacity on Lieberman's part?

24. a flawed argument with no sign of any strategy
"...what everyone thinks it was before" : not everyone

"...victory" : defined as what?

"...international war" : hardly; most Iraqi insurgents are homegrown

And his strategy to win this "victory" is what?

26. He's probably right -
"The Iranians will .... surge into Iraq, certainly take over the south and the oil that's there".

It's probably going to happen whether the U.S. stays or goes, and that's why the neo-cons are
now talking war with Iran, as the only possible way to prevent. Won't work, of course, but that
hasn't stopped them so far.

But who made it possible? The real point is that it never should have bloody happened. Now, the
U.S. is damned if it goes, and damned if it stays. But as Bush says, that's the next president's
problem.
