Bomb Plot Evidence 'Immense,' British Say
But as 11 suspects are charged, authorities face skepticism from the nation's Muslims.
By Kim Murphy, Times Staff Writer
August 22, 2006

LONDON — In the first unveiling of evidence in the alleged plot to down U.S.-bound airliners, British authorities said Monday that their searches had turned up "martyrdom videos," suicide notes, bomb-making equipment and maps.

The evidence, offered to bolster charges filed Monday against 11 suspects, hinted at a trove of material and leads yet to be examined.

"The scale is immense. Inquiries will span the globe. The enormity of the alleged plot will be matched only by our determination to follow every lead, and every line of inquiry," said Peter Clarke, chief of counter-terrorism for the London police.

But less than two weeks after arresting two dozen suspects, British authorities have faced increased skepticism from the public. In particular, many of Britain's estimated 1.5 million Muslims have been angered by previous roundups, including two in which suspects were shot, that failed to uncover adequate

1. Yet, they gave no details or any useful information. Really.
Edited on Tue Aug-22-06 09:27 PM by PointAndLaugh
I was watching BBC international last night. All they offered were sound bites from "anonymous police sources", such as "materials were found", "plot was complicated and involved many operatives", etc. They gave the names and ages of suspects, but that was it. Then some "terrorism expert" came on to be interviewed by the BBC anchor, and he said that the British Muslim community should be "convinced" with the evidence so far.

Evidence ? ...."materials were found" said the "anonymous police source" ?

4. Plot details were derived under torture
according to author Nafeez Ahmed. It would be so unreasonable to think that someone being tortured will tell his interrigator anything he thinks the interregator wants to hear to get the torture to stop.

Nafeez Ahmed: The Truth about the "Terror Plot".... and the new "psuedo-terrorism"

The NBC News report further reveals, citing British security sources, that British police did not want to yet arrest Rashid Rauf, the alleged mastermind, al-Qaeda facilitator and key informant on the details of the plot: “British security was concerned that Rauf be taken into custody ‘in circumstances where there was due process,’ according to the official, so that he could be tried in British courts. Ultimately, this official says, Rauf was arrested over the objections of the British.”

However, the arrest of Rashid Rauf is at the crux of the case, as it purportedly triggered the ensuing wave of arrests, with Rauf providing in-depth details of the plot to his interrogators in Pakistan. Among the details attributed to Rauf is the idea that the plotters intended to mix a “sports drink” with a gel-like “peroxide-based paste” to create a chemical explosive that “could be ignited with an MP3 player or cell phone.”

The problem is that several Pakistani newspapers reported on 13th August that “Rauf had ‘broken’ under interrogation.” The reports were described by a Pakistani human rights group “as confirmation that he had been tortured.” According to the Guardian, “Asma Jehangir, of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, said that it was obvious how the information had been obtained. ‘I don’t deduce, I know -- torture,’ she said. ‘There is simply no doubt about that, no doubt at all.’”

That most of the details about the plot came from Rauf, who has been tortured and “broken” while under interrogation in Pakistan, raises serious questions about the credibility of the story being promoted by the British and American governments.

9. The big difference
is that the Brits tend not to leak information to the media as the sub judice rules are very strong and there is no First Amendment restraint. Actually from what I've read so far I'm stunned at the amount of information that's been released. It reeks of political involvement, get the info out to the public, convince them that these busts were righteous. It will be interesting to see what happens when they eventually get to court and watch the reaction of the courts to the extraordinary leaks so far. I wouldn't be surprised if there are moves to stay the trials on the grounds a fair trial is impossible because of the prejudicial leaks.

15. Agreed.
The lady from the Crown Prosecution Service was very measured and careful but the Police spokesman reeled off a load of facts and figures about gigabytes etc. Reminded me of Chertoff's speech after hurricane Katrina, the same focus on numbers and figures to try and prove they're doing a heckuva job.

13. If the evidence was so compelling....
then why did they only detain 11 of the 22 that were arrested?

Something's missing in this investigation, and I think its the truth!

Of course it's important to keep this story in the forefront of the news because the latest polls show the public approval creeping away from the President and his cronies..

The political slapfests of late have been airing videos on Bush, Cheney, et al... revealing their constant contradictions.. and also the backstepping of the usual ass-kissers..(Scarborogh, Tweety, and the gang..

17. Facts are skewed.
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 09:42 AM by igil
They've charged 11, released two, and have detained without charges (so far) another 11. They have up to 28 days to charge a detainee, provided that a judge authorizes further detention every 7 days.

So far 11 charged, 2 released, and 11 with indeterminate status.

on edit: I'm going to hedge on the number with indeterminate status. I'm assuming 24 suspects, not asserting that I remember hearing the number '11'.

18. We know if they had found BOMBS they would of made a photo ops

the center piece of the news conferance, the lack of physical proof so far clearly alarms any non biased review of the case as serously lacking any evidence.
