Democrats await decision on Witek

BY MARTHA STODDARD

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN - The Nebraska Democratic Party says it's ready to do legal battle, if necessary, over its nomination of incumbent Kate Witek as the Democratic candidate for state auditor.

Eric Fought, communications director, said today that party leaders hoped to hear quickly whether Secretary of State John Gale, a Republican, would agree to put Witek's name on the November ballot.

Fought said Democrats expected a partisan decision, which they plan to meet with a legal challenge.

The party filed certification of Witek's nomination with the Secretary of State's Office on Monday.

Note. Kate changed parties just last Wednesday, after being a life long Republican. At our state convention Saturday, the party placed her name on the ballot that had no democrat that sought the nomination during the primary.
