Russians Fear Passenger Jet Has Crashed

MOSCOW (AP) -- "A Russian passenger jet with 170 people aboard disappeared from radar screens over Ukraine and probably crashed, an emergency official said. The RIA-Novosti news agency reported that wreckage was found on the ground in Ukraine.

The plane, on its way from the Black Sea resort of Anapa to St. Petersburg, disappeared from radar screens, Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Yulia Stadnikova said..."

MOSCOW, August 22 (Itar-Tass) -- The crash scene of a Tu-154 jetliner of Pulkovo Airlines and 30 bodies have been found near Donetsk in Ukraine, a source at the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told Itar-Tass.

The Tu-154 was en route from Anapa to St. Petersburg when disappeared from radar screens in Ukraine. The crew sent a May Day signal at 3:37 p.m. Moscow time, and the plane disappeared from radar screens at 3:39 p.m.

The jetliner was carrying 160 passengers and ten crewmembers.

The Russian Transport Ministry has said that “a strong thunderstorm was observed” in the area of the Tupolev-154 passenger jet’s crash 45 kilometers north of Donetsk in Ukraine.

Anapa's a not so cushy, but pleasant, resort area. But it's not far from some troubled parts of the country.

Lots of kids on board. Lots. Probably returning with parents from vacation or returning to parents from camp.
