Ecuador Volcano Victims in Need of Help

QUITO, Ecuador -- Thousands of villagers whose homes were destroyed
by a volcanic eruption in Ecuador are in urgent need of food and other
relief supplies, officials said Monday.

Tungurahua volcano remained calm after an eruption last week destroyed
10 villages, killing four people and burying the houses of almost 5,000
people under tons of ash. Tens of thousands of acres of pasture and crops
were also destroyed, according to the Civil Defense.

Jorge Arteaga, director of operations for the Red Cross, said Monday that
displaced villagers urgently needed food and other supplies.

"Not only do we want food for people. We also want food and medicine
for animals because they are dying of starvation and diseases. Everything
is covered by ash and they do not have anything to eat," said Fausto Acosta,
the mayor of Banos, a city of 18,000 people in the central Andes region.

1. It'd be interesting to see what the "All Compassionate" coughed up.
Probably not too impressive, as he needs to save it for more tax cuts for the wealthy.

Peru's donation for Ecuadorian volcano victims arrives in Quito

Ecuador's civil defense authorities on Monday received five tons of humanitarian aid items provided by Peru to help those hit by the eruption of the Tungurahua Volcano.

The aid items, which included canned food, tents and bedding, came after the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry made a request last week following the disasterous volcanic eruption which left seven people dead, 13 injured, more than 3,000 displaced, as well as many people missing.

The eruption also destroyed 40,000 hectares of crops and affected a million people across the country. The Eucadorian government has declared a state of emergency in regions of Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Bolivar and Chimborazo.

Ecuador has also received aid from the United States, Switzerland and Spain.
