DETROIT (AP) -- A coalition of labor unions that broke off from the AFL-CIO endorsed Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Monday in her re-election bid.

It was the first endorsement by the Change to Win alliance, whose affiliated unions already had thrown their support behind Granholm individually.

"This election is about wages, health care and retirement security for all of Michigan's working men and women," Teamsters President James P. Hoffa said in a statement on behalf of the group. "This state needs a leader who will stand up for Michigan workers, and that leader is Gov. Granholm."

Change to Win, founded in September, is comprised of the Teamsters, the Service Employees International Union, the United Food and Commercial Workers, the Laborers, the Carpenters, the United Farm Workers, and UNITE HERE, which represents textile, hotel and restaurant employees
