Reservists call on Olmert, Peretz to resign

Some 200 reservists called on the prime minister, the defense minister and the army chief to resign during a rally held in Jerusalem Monday evening. The protesters explained that the three must step down due to the failures of the second Lebanon war. They added that a commission of inquiry was not a sufficient answer.

The demonstrators, who marched in the direction of the Prime Minister's Office, were blocked by the Office's security guards and forced to hold the rally nearby instead. The reservists spoke of shortage in supplies and food during wartime. They also complained that the orders they were given during the fighting changed by the hour.

Assaf Davidoff, one of the rally's organizers, who serves in the Alexandroni Brigade, spoke of his reserve duty in Lebanon: "The entire preparation for the war was horrendous. We could see it from day one. The whole conduct of the war reserves store unit was terrible. We could see we lack basic fighting equipment, meant to protect our lives. There were also serious logistical problems that affected our fighting abilities. All of this took place against the backdrop of the uncertainty that characterized this war and the leaders' lack of decisiveness."

...

According to Davidoff, despite what they have been through, the protesters will report for reserve duty again if they are called up. "We will report for any call up in the future, but we are concerned for ourselves and for the people of Israel who will come forward in the next war. We want then to have the proper gear and the proper leaders," he concluded.

8. Amazing how quickly it happend. You'd think Murkans would call
for little lord pissy pants and rummy to step down. You'd think more in the military would call for Rummy to step down.

15. I wish our military could speak up about being abused more
but the M$M plays them like pawns in a ratings chess game. I tell ya what, I'm ready for anything now. If we say go to the streets, I'm there! Maybe it is time to defend our 'Armed Forces' honor. Bush has disgraced his office and the responsibility of being the Commander&Chief of our Armed Forces. Unfit to command, someone make a citizens arrest! For the good of the country!

To all active troops, I love you all and hold on we will get rid of the vermin infesting the WH! Repukes are GOIN DOWN!

4. I think these reservists speak for the Israeli public in a sense
since all Israeli has to serve in the army onetime or another.

11. This is why Rummie and Co don't want a draft
If people were forced to serve like they are in Israel, you are more like to have people stirring up discontent. An all 'volunteer' army has much less of a right to complain.

5. BRAVO!!!! The war was fought WRONG. They were treated badly.
Unattainable Goals.
Too many civilians killed on both sides.
The Government SUXS
TOO MANY IDF Soldiers were killed for NOTHING!!!

I bet you thought I was talking it was the US until IDF was mentioned.

Bravo to the IDF reservists and Israeli civilians who are speaking out.

That war was a waste of lives on all sides. You can't fight terrorists in a conventional war especially one where Rumsfeld is giving tips. Shame on the Israeli government for even listening to his dumb ass. I can't believe they couldn't see Iraq and Afghanistan as shining examples of what not to do.

Israel learned. Too bad our dumb-ass government and their supporters are too stoopid.

6. That's odd
If you were preparing to launch a pre-emptive invasion at least a year in advance and you have Israel's means and skill at preparing for real campaigns at the drop of a hat then why were they not ready to fight? Very very interesting.

7. They were prepared for something conventional. You can't fight terrorists
like you would a regular state sanctioned army.

It doesn't work. I'm surprised that the poor fuckers didn't realise that after watching us get our asses handed to us in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Fighting terrorists on their home turf with the ability to blend in and mobility can't be fought from the air first and limited ground troops after.

17. I was talking about the lack of preparations in terms of supplies
If your army isn't properly equipped with basic things like body armour and ready to go in it makes you wonder if the IDF was in on this only recently or not. If the IDF was pushing for this they probably wouldn't be having these kind of supply problems, sounds like it was something the government wanted and made the military come around in a very short amount of time.

9. Nothing new here
I remember after the Yom Kippur war ... it also ended in an imposed cease-fire - and the animus toward Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan - venerated names, but they paid the political price.

Reservists rally in Jerusalem as protests over war snowball

The campaign mounted by Israel Defense Forces reserve soldiers spread Monday as bereaved families joined them in demands for a national inquiry into the Lebanon war, and for the resignations of the prime minister and defense minister.

Some 20 reservists accompanied by civilians Monday marched from the entrance to Jerusalem to the Prime Minister's Office, where they called on the cabinet and IDF chief of staff to resign. In the evening the protesters settled in the Rose Garden.

A participant in the march told Army Radio the marchers intend to camp out in front of the Prime Minister's office and call for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz and IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz to "draw personal conclusions" and resign.

"I'm telling Ehud Olmert and Amir Peretz to look me in the eye and tell me they are fit to hold their posts," Sgt. Maj. Lior Vilnes, one of the protesters, told Channel 2 television.
