Romney: U.S. Needs Skilled Immigrants
Romney: U.S. Needs Skilled Immigrants
By LAURA KURTZMAN
Associated Press Writer

August 20, 2006, 12:52 AM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney told the California GOP convention Saturday the United States should encourage foreigners with skills to immigrate, while discouraging those who come here illegally and without skills.

"It is wrong for us to build an absolute concrete wall against those with skills and enterprise," he said, referring to foreign students who come here for advanced study, "and have a wide open door for people with no education and no skills."

His remarks were greeted with enthusiastic applause from this conservative crowd, for whom illegal immigration is a hot issue. Romney, a Republican governor in a Democratic state, is exploring a presidential run in 2008. California, with its reservoir of campaign cash, is a key stop along campaign trails.

1. Yeah right.
While looking for tech work on the internet, I have come across a number of job listings that are H-1 only.

Jobs tha me, you or others who live here could be getting.

9. That's outrageous
If the Democrats were smart, they'd introduce a ton of bills designed to prevent American citizens being turned down employment in favor of "guest workers". In fact, the whole thing sounds like job discrimination.

5. with a hightech twist:
Romney seems to be saying - come take our desirable jobs... and leave the no-skill /low-wage jobs for Americans!

Winning sentiment :eyes:

6. These people don't want to pay the clean up crew a decent wage
let alone skilled labor. All those HB1 people coming over will get theirs in the end because they will screw you too to keep cheap labor.

7. We need skilled immigrants like we need Bush
No way! No how~ We have a tremendous number of skilled American workers either unemployed or underemployed. That is where Democrats should be going for support. The economy is in the toilet. Wages have dropped. They are the base.

8. How about putting more money into education and giving kids a shot?
Gee, Mitty, wouldn't that make more sense, Oh, I forgot, you believe in a totally privatized education system.

Must be a shame to be an even bigger jerk than your father was, Mitty!

10. Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
What America needs to do is a better job at educating our young, and training Americans for these jobs!

11. But even that isn't the case
America already has tons of skilled, well-trained people. More than enough, really. It's simply that cheap-labor capitalism has slammed the door in their face in favor of low-paid "guest workers" and low-paid offshore workers in foreign countries.

12. Yeah, what a load of crap.
This kind of thing happened to a friend of mine who was a network engineer at an IT firm. He made about $65K a year before he was cut. The firm hired an H1-B person to replace him, and he found out later that this H1-B worker was only making $27K/yr. with very limited benefits. My friend now sells cars for a living making about half of what he was. Some economy huh?

14. Apparently, builders think that "no education and no skills"
are quite valuable, or else they would not hire day laborers in droves to work on their construction projects.
These exploiters of the masses WANT them to think that they have "no education and no skills", when in fact they are very valuable to the builder's bottom line.
Mitt and his GOP exploiters club would like people to believe that illegals have "no education and no skills", when in fact they have them in abundance, and are all too eager to exploit them.
More lip service.
