VP hits the road to attack Democrats

By Mark Silva, Washington Bureau. Tribune staff reporter John McCormick in Chicago contributed to this report
Published August 19, 2006

WASHINGTON -- With Republicans facing increasingly tough prospects in November, Vice President Dick Cheney has returned to the campaign trail in a familiar role: Accusing Democratic war critics of defeatism and leveling harsh charges that President Bush is less comfortable making.

"If we follow advice and withdraw from Iraq," Cheney said this week in Arizona, "we will simply validate the Al Qaeda strategy and invite more terrorist attacks." Advocates of withdrawal play into the hands of terrorists, he charged the next day in Montana: "They fundamentally believe that we don't have the stomach for the fight."

As the war debate intensifies--with the White House insisting on staying the course and Democrats increasingly demanding an exit strategy--it is becoming a pivotal issue in many races.

In Chicago, where the Democratic National Committee was meeting Friday, top Democrats ridiculed Cheney's attacks. Calling the comments a " rear-guard action," committee member Harold Ickes, formerly an aide to President Bill Clinton, said that "the Middle East is in more chaos than it ever was. That's the issue the Democrats need to raise."

13. They are sending Cheney out to do the dirty work..
using up what little political capital he has left before he is scapegoated into taking full responsibility for the War, the economy, job loss, high interest rates, ethnic cleansing...etc.etc.etc.

There isn't a living soul left in America that believes what this 'legend in his own mind' expounds as a game plan against democrats. It's the same repetitive BS he is peddling that if anything, will cause the majority of Americans to puke.

Have at it Dick..the more you say, the better we like it!

Halliburton is a unique kind of company. -- Dick Cheney

For those of you who don't get the Hightower Lowdown, I thought I'd share some data compiled in the latest issue.
It sort of explains part of the "stay the course."

"Halliburton is a unique kind of company." -- Dick Cheney, September 2003

Total value of contracts given to Halliburton for work in the Bush-Cheney "War on Terror" since 2001.........More than $15 billion

Amount that Halliburton pays to the Third World laborers it imports into Iraq to do the work
in its dining facilities, laundries, etc.....................................................................$6 per 12-hour day
(50 cents per hour)

Amount that Halliburton bills us taxpayers for each of these workers..........................................$50 a day

Amount that Halliburton bills taxpayers for:
-- A case of sodas........................$45
-- Washing a bag of laundry...............$100

Halliburton's campaign contributions in Bush-Cheney election years:
-- In 2000: $285,252 (96% to Republicans)
-- In 2004: $145,500 (89% to Republicans)
Plus $365,065 from members of its board of directors (99% to Republicans)

Increase in Halliburton's profits since Bush-Cheney took office in 2000.......................................379%

Halliburton's 2005 profit (highest in the corporation's 86-year history)......................................$1.1 billion

"Since I left Halliburton to become George Bush's vice-president, I've severed all ties with the company, gotten rid of all
my financial interest. I have no financial interest in Halliburton of any kind."
-- Former CEO Dick Cheney, Meet the Press, September 2003

Annual payments that Cheney has received from Halliburton since he's been vice-president:
-- 2001: $205,298
-- 2002: $162,392
-- 2003: $178,437
-- 2004: $194,852
-- 2005: $211,465

Cash bonus paid to Cheney by Halliburton just before he took office...........................................$1.4 million

Retirement package he was given in 2000 after only 5 years as CEO.............................................$20 million

Number of times in the past two years that Republicans have killed Senator Byron Dorgan's amendment
to set up a Truman-style committee on war profiteering to investigate Halliburton..............................3

Naughty word Cheney used during a Senate photo session in 2004 to assail Sen. Patrick Leahy,
who had criticized Cheney's ties to Halliburton........................................................."Go #@!% yourself."

18. Isn't Halliburton basically a company that makes its money
on the aftermath of wars and destruction? So of course they're gonna want to break stuff.

3. In a sane world no political party would put someone who's approval
rating is at 19% on the road to campaign. A proven liar and attempted murderer (even if only guilty by reckless disregrad for the safety of others).

Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 11:29 AM by Botany
... the real work comes in rigging the vote, controlling the media,
and building a cover story of plausible deniability on why the vote
came out as it did.

This fall it will be that although unpopular at the last minute people
voted for republicans because they could protect us better.

Also Cheney and bush still bring in the big bucks at the fund raisers.

8. But "they" could not do it without a complaint media.
The New York Times actively worked to kill the biggest story in the nation's
history that the elections are rigged. So did many other "news" organizations.

The data, evidence, facts, and testimony are there that that 2004 was stolen
and not unlike global warming many can not or will not see it.

Cheney going out and talking about terror with the track record that his
administration has on the subject should be outright laughable but somehow
it gets sold as something other then it is.

21. There should be a disclaimer in EVERY Cheney article...
... that he has been 180 degrees wrong about everything concerning Iraq. There was no terrorist connection, no WMD, no throwing of flowers, no "last-gasp" of the insurgency... the list goes on.

He couldn't be more wrong. Then, or now.

NO you fucking moron, THAT is EXACTLY what they want. YOU are playing into their hands by reacting violently and thus exposing our weaknesses. Dick Cheney - you are the single stupidest dupe on the planet, next to your idiot moron boss that is.

It sucks being ruled by immature children who haven't gotten past the bully stage yet.

36. Cheney, after the election (00) was put in charge of the 'anti-terrorism'
task force.

Despite the briefings from the Clinton transition team (esp Clarke) of the seriousness of the threat; despite the very "big publicity" breakup of the 'millenium' terrorist plot; despite the attack on the Cole during the election... Despite all of this - Cheney couldn't be bothered to hold a SINGLE meeting of the task force prior to 9-11.

However he held many, many "secret" Energy Advisory Group meetings during that time...

It irks me to no end that those in the media covering Cheney and his ludicrous claims always seem to forget/exclude the point of his personal negligence on Security issues prior to September 11. He should have ZERO credibility.
