US snipers stake out rooftops as soldiers search Baghdad
US snipers stake out rooftops as soldiers search Baghdad
by Thibauld Malterre

BAGHDAD (AFP) - On a sweltering summer day, sniper Jesse Turner, 27, scans a large swathe of Baghdad from the roof of the tallest building in the capital's Shuala neighbourhood.

As Turner keeps watch, colleagues from his US military unit conduct an intense house-to-house search below.

"Personally, I don't want to kill anybody," says a cheerful Turner.

"I will do my job even though it looks like assassinating people who do not know that they are being shot at. But if they want to kill my friend or hurt American soldiers, I will do my job."

Specialist Turner and Sergeant Mark Peters have a daunting task.

"From here we are able to see the whole area," says Peters, a native of Ohio. "We are watching the rooftops and down the alleyways, trying to see if someone is hiding something."

1. there's no news in this article, just a human interest propaganda...
...dispatch from the occupation. A sniper tells the reporter why he likes being a sniper. This is LBN?

4. Sure they are - more and more now.
Probably a hell of a lot more now. More than probably.

I do wonder how many reporters are really going out to report these days - in Baghdad especially??

it is an indication of the progress being made in Iraq.
