E&P: Tony Snow Disputes Press Reports on Bush's 'Frustration'
Editor&Publisher: Tony Snow Disputes Press Reports on Bush's 'Frustration'
By E&P Staff
Published: August 16, 2006, updated Thursday

NEW YORK Generals, pundits, and members of Congress may see shades of grey in the situation, but Tony Snow, the White House Press Secretary, has no such doubts. "There is not a civil war going on" in Iraq, he declared Wednesday in his daily meeting with reporters.

As for the upsurge in brutal killings and bombings that left more than 3,400 civilians dead last month, Snow characterized this as "a number of sectarian violence operations going on." The New York Times reports Thursday that the number of roadside bombs planted in Iraq rose in July to the highest monthly total of the war.

Snow also took issue with New York Times and Los Angeles Times stories on Wednesday depicting President Bush as growing "frustrated" with lack of appreciation for U.S. efforts on the part of Iraqis....

***

SNOW: One other note: A number of newspapers today had -- or a couple, The New York Times and L.A. Times -- had pieces about the President's meeting the other day with Iraq scholars. Just a couple of nits to pick with the Times piece -- and I have spoken with the notetaker in the meeting, I was in the meeting, I've talked to others in the meeting and I've talked to all four scholars today, and all, to a person, take exception to a verb or variations of that verb that appear a number of times at the top of the piece, which is that the President is "frustrated"-- he's "frustrated" that the new Iraqi government and the Iraqi people have not shown greater support for the American mission.

All the participants said that that did not reflect the meeting they attended....

2. Tony sounds like Bagdad Bob!
Remember while we were all watching the bombings at the Bagdad airport Bob was saying it's all propaganda, and everything's just fine?

Maybe we should give him a new name? How about Washington Tony Snowjob?

3. Deny, deny, deny. When you get caught, deny some more.

Our current administration reminds me of a scene from the 1967 movie A Guide for the Married Man which starred almost everyone in Hollywood at the time. In this scene, Joey Bishop was having an affair with another woman in his own bed. Bishop's wife walks in and catches them in the act. When confronted, Bishop just kept denying it.

"What woman? Where? I don't see any woman." "I have no idea what you're talking about, there is no other woman in this room." All the while, Bishop and his female friend are quickly getting dressed. When completely dressed, the woman runs out of the house while Bishop continues to deny, deny, deny.

Exasperated, the wife finally gives up, half convinced that she didn't really see what she saw. All these years later, the same thing continues to work for the Bush Administration.

6. So who does he think he is, Kevin Bacon?
Remember that scene in "Animal House" where all hell's broken loose along the parade route through town, and this one single ROTC kid (played by Kevin Bacon) is hollering "ALL IS WELL!!!" as the unruly mobs mow him down?

Hey, tony - howdya like being part of "Animal House," 'eh? Six degrees of tony snow.

7. Lemmie See If I Have This Straight.
More people were killed in Iraq in the last month than were killed as a result of the 9/11 attacks.

Iraq = not so bad
9/11 = Give up your rights and like it and if you don't your a traitor. Does that about sum it up?

8. boom? What "boom"?
MR. SNOW: I think what's going to happen, as people learn more and more -- as you saw just last week, there was an 11-point pivot just on the basis of the fact that things that people had not seen in terms of behind-the-scenes operations to thwart terror, suddenly said, oh, boy, we do have something -- boom, 11-point jump. I think as people begin to see more --

What 11-point pivot?

I see no 11-point pivot.
