Hollywood heavyweights Nicole Kidman, Michael Douglas, Danny DeVito, Rupert Murdoch and more than 80 other stars played against type and entered stage right yesterday with an ad condemning Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Palestine and terrorists everywhere.

"We the undersigned are pained and devastated by the civilian casualties in Israel and Lebanon caused by terrorist actions initiated by terrorist organizations such as Hezbollah and Hamas," the full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times reads....

Hezbollah and Hamas really don't give a damn what the above group of people have to say. I'm pretty sure most of them don't read the LA Times. It takes more than putting full page ads in newspapers to stop wars. How about listening to Hezbollah and Hamas once in awhile and try to have peace talks.

I don't see how ANYBODY can blame Hezbollah or Hamas for ISRAEL's bombing of innocent civilians in Beirut and southern Lebanon. They just marginalize themselves by taking such a position. They are making the classic error of the boy who "cried wolf too often." Both Hezbollah and Hamas represent people who have been shoved aside. Both are the chosen representatives of their people. Hezbollah has seats in the Lebanese government. Hamas was elected to represent the Palestinians. They are not "terrorists." They are angry, and they have used violence against Israel, but the scale of THEIR carnage against Israel pales in comparison to what Israel just did to Beirut. I don't condone either side's violence--especially violence against civilians--and clearly there are grave problems among these various peoples that NO ONE on OUR side is even ATTEMPTING to address by peaceful means. But putting Hezbollah and Hamas in the same category as Al Qaeda or Timothy McVeigh is just plain inaccurate. They are people with a deep grievance. They are very similar to the IRA--and the ONLY solution that will not mean endless violence among these peoples, is to integrate Hezbollah and Hamas into a political process by means of diplomacy, and a fair airing and settlement of grievances, agreed to by everybody. Calling them "terrorists" is STUPID.


Ah, you know what? I just read right past Rupert Murdoch's name. Didn't see it. And I understand your poster a little better now, too. So we're not just dealing with stupidity. We're dealing with crazed rightwing ideology and a corporate predator monopoly. Nothing more need be said.
