GA Governor's 2 million dollar Florida land deal questioned
http://www.wtvm.com/Global/story.asp?S=5291115&nav=menu91_2

ATLANTA Governor Perdue spent two (m) million dollars to buy about 20 acres of Florida land just miles from Disney World, purchasing the property from a wealthy Republican donor.

Perdue bought the land from Stanley Thomas, a Georgia developer with a fleet of planes that the governor used at least once to get to a West Coast fundraiser. The 2004 purchase came a little more than a year after Perdue appointed Thomas to the state Board of Economic Development. About a year after the purchase one of Thomas' companies, Fourth Quarter Properties, donated a whopping 250-thousand dollars to the state Republican Party.

Perdue said there was nothing improper about the deal. The Republican governor said that he bought the land in Florida because purchasing property in Georgia while he was governor would have created a conflict of interest.

But Democrats questioned whether Perdue had violated federal anti-corruption laws. They called for an investigation.

14. What I can't understand about that TV ad is this:
Right after it came out, it was completely discredited. Roy Barnes even came out and smacked Sonny's ass down for the blatant lies.

I know the damn GA Dem party has no money, but there are other groups out there that do. Can't someone play nice long enough to put out an ad proving AGAIN that these "claims" that he miraculously conjured up millions is false?

3. I'm going to post this in the Ga. forum too. They don't get much
activity there, but maybe THIS one will. I hope the OP doesn't mind.

4. Looks like the Culture of Corruption is alive and well.

If it's that close to Rat City and soon to be on a major roadway he got it at a bargain price.

9. Bargain price is an understatement. 2 million for 20 acres near Orlando?
That is a sweetheart deal. :grr:

I've met Perdue twice. He's a typical big business Republican. He used to be a Democrat: a Dixiecrat-Conservative Populist sort of old fashioned GA Democrat. I don't trust him one bit. I told him I'd never vote for a Republican when he asked for my vote.

He's ruining our state. He claims to be pro-education but has cut the education budget by 1.4 BILLION dollars in the last four years. GA is ranked 49th in education. So, counties have to raise the special local option sales tax to pay for new schools and other facilities. However, rich communities get good schools (more money spent = more SPLOST dollars) and poor communities get crappy ones because they don;t have a big economic base and very little state money comes their way anymore.
:grr:

8. Republicans have to do much more than this to lose in Georgia.
The ring of red around blue Atlanta would only consider this the price of doing business.

They don't give a shit what Republicans do as long as they get their "tax cuts".

10. Business & corporate interests are making the most donations to the GA GOP
now that they are the party in power. It used to be that the money went to Democrats when they were in power for the last century. Bottom line is that the party in power will get the most money and they will remain in power. That's not even factoring in Diebold.

11. Remember Denny Hastert's land deal.... legislation to inflate its value
Edited on Thu Aug-17-06 08:59 AM by seafan
suddenly popped up.

The clincher in Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue's land deal in Florida:

The land is adjacent to a new toll road that is being constructed that will run directly to Disney World about six miles away. The road is set to be completed in December.

The level of corruption in the GOP is beyond comprehension.
