Port terminal evacuated over possible bomb - Seattle
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 04:09 PM by opiate69
Bomb squads are responding to Terminal 18 on Seattle's waterfront after a canine bomb team found possible explosives in a container, the Coast Guard said this afternoon.

Mike Milne, spokesman for Customs and Border Protection, said "a couple of (cargo) containers were set aside for standard exam'' and a CBP dog trained to detect explosives "alerted on it.''

CBP followed standard protocols and summoned the Port of Seattle Police bomb squad "to see if there is a threat.''

The container was supposed to hold oily rags but inspectors found objects that were not on the inventory. U.S. Customs and Border Protection then sent in its bomb team.

5. Yep, we Seattleites can't get enough of those oily rags!
it's for the lutefisk. this is the city that arrested a local artist for parking his art car downtown, with a giant fiberglass heart in the back and a bumper sticker that said 'da bomb'. Coincidently occuring the very afertnoon the police department was denied it's request for a very expensive bomb robot.

8. I would guess for cleaning and resale...
There are companies which will clean the rags (since disposal is highly regulated) and resell them as shop rags.. you'd probably be surprised what kind of materials flow through the salvage industry.

9. indeed... I work for a shipping company, we move these things all the time
it counts as hazardous material, but they get cleaned and re-sold, or safely disposed-of, one or the other

25. I'm sure glad we have a missile defense shield...
I mean, if something in one of the shipping containers were to release a balloon, and the balloon had a transponder, then we could use a missile to shoot it down.

Some of the time.
