Bombings kill at least 19 in Baghdad

By BUSHRA JUHI, Associated Press Writer 58 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Bombs killed at least 19 people in the Iraqi capital Wednesday, as British troops drove off dozens of gunmen who laid siege to the governor's office in the southern city of Basra, apparently to avenge a tribal leader killed the day before.

In Baghdad, deputy Health Minister Adel Muhsin said about 3,500 Iraqis died last month in sectarian or political violence nationwide. Muhsin said he had no comparative figures for other months but added that the July figure was the highest monthly tally of the war.

Last week, the ministry said about 1,500 violent deaths were reported in the Baghdad area alone in July.

Bush Said to Be Frustrated by Level of Public Support in Iraq

By THOM SHANKER and MARK MAZZETTI

WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 — President Bush made clear in a private meeting this week that he was concerned about the lack of progress in Iraq and frustrated that the new Iraqi government — and the Iraqi people — had not shown greater public support for the American mission, participants in the meeting said Tuesday.

But in what participants described as a telling line of questioning, Mr. Bush did ask each of the academic experts for their assessment of the prime minister’s effectiveness.

“I sensed a frustration with the lack of progress on the bigger picture of Iraq generally — that we continue to lose a lot of lives, it continues to sap our budget,” said one person who attended the meeting. “The president wants the people in Iraq to get more on board to bring success.”

More generally, the participants said, the president expressed frustration that Iraqis had not come to appreciate the sacrifices the United States had made in Iraq, and was puzzled as to how a recent anti-American rally in support of Hezbollah in Baghdad could draw such a large crowd. “I do think he was frustrated about why 10,000 Shiites would go into the streets and demonstrate against the United States,” said another person who attended.

4. Another wonderful day in the 51st state.
Thousands of lives wasted, billions of dollars given away, all for nothing.

Way to go Bush.

If we do not punish the leaders of the corporate cabal for war crimes, we are not a civilized nation.

8. I think the US has already outpaced Saddam --
After all, Saddam had 25 years, and the US has had only 3 1/2, if you don't count the cooperative years when both Saddam AND the US were killing Iraqis.

7. Baghdad thru Tikrit is a hellhole
Most of Iraq is ok, people don't bother you too much. But in Bagdad and up north to Tikrit you keep your eyes open.
