17. That woman could have been me.
I'm also very claustrophobic and I fly only when it's a matter or life or death. I also have a screwdriver on my Swiss Army knife, though I guess I couldn't get on a plane with that. I'd have to be sedated to fly, but I know other people who are claustrophobic who try to "conquer their fear" by facing it; in other words, no pills or booze pre-flight. (I guess that doesn't always work).

43. My Pet Goat
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 12:43 PM by saigon68

My Pet Goat is a masterpiece of strategic thought

Destined to take their place alongside von Clausewitz and Sun Tzu, Engelmann and Bruner have captured the very essence of strategic thought in a mere 32 large-print pages. In this masterwork, when Smirky the Goat is stung on the nose by Osama the Wasp, he jumps over the fence and butts the living daylights of out Saddam the Swine. Advanced students will see the seeds of the Bush Doctrine in this landmark book.

If you're a dictator masked as a leader of the free world, you'll love this book! It helps you sleep at night when thousands of people die on your watch. Ms. Engelmann has done the world a favor in writing this captivating book. It enriches the mind, and makes you forget about all the problems in the world. Like the problem of planes flying into stuff. But why worry, when you and the secret service KNOW that a plane isn't headed for the school you're in? Why worry about your life and the lives of hundreds of children when you've already murdered 3,000 others? Why worry when you've already pre-planned a war that will kill tens of thousands of foreigners and thousands of the very people you represent? Why worr..... mmm, sorry I got off track.
I rate this book a 5! It'll be famous someday!

Wow-- this has got to be the best literary work ever! It makes "Gone With The Wind" seem like junk. The first time I read this, the house next door was on fire-- (i accidently started the fire, i just started reading this after I came from visiting next door). There was a family living there---a husband, a wife, and three young children. The fire was spreading and they were pleading for help. No one else could hear their cries but me. But it was not as important as finishing "The Pet Goat". From the first sentence, I was hooked! As the adults were burning alive, it meant nothing to me. I just had to find out if the girl got to keep her pet goat. When the part about the car robber came, i was biting off my fingernails in suspense. The three children then started to burn alive, and there was no one who could hear them but me. My knees were shaking in suspense as what would happen when the goat saw the robber.

Well, I don't want to ruin it for the rest of you. All I can say is, I was not dissapointed. Touching, moving, and at the same time, over the top! WOW.

Oh by the way, all the family members next door died, it was too late. I could have helped them or called the fire department, but finishing "The Pet Goat" was far more important. Even though this fire was caused by me, I feel no guilt whatsoever of being responsible for innocent lives lost.

Get this book, you won't be dissapointed! You can see how good it must be, if finishing it is more important than helping dying people who are dying because of your actions.

55. You know, you maybe onto something there...
Just like when monty python created the "killer joke" to help defeat nazi germany, perhaps Ms. Engelmann created a modern manifesto with the writing of "my pet goat"? Basically, this is the PNAC road map to defeating terror wrapped in whimsy.

I think about how nursery rhymes were actually political statements reflecting upon the times of days gone by. Perhaps, with "my pet goat", she was trying to tell not only the U.S. citizens of the threats against us but for a global threat that was soon to grip the world?

Don't be taken in by it's light hearted nature, it's spells out in intricate detail the very nature of the world ahead of us.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

24. update from OP link
Naccara said he did not believe any items she was carrying were the cause of the outburst. An airport spokesman previously said the woman was carrying lotion, a screw driver and matches, but backed off the statement, and Naccara said it wasn’t true.

Of course she would not have those things because they are forbidden and no one is allowed on a plane with them. Security works, see? Keeps us safe. Catches all those bad items. She COULDN'T have gotten those on, see? :sarcasm:

54. To reply...
1. On the humorous side, I thought that "screw loose" would be appropriate to a disturbed individual with a screwdriver.

2. I had not even thought about "..advocating all passengers be screened by a shrink.." and I have no idea where you got that from my post. But now that you mention it, if you have a phobia that has a high likelyhood of causing you to be a disturbance when you fly, then don't fly, or at least get a valium prescription and take a couple before getting on the plane. Someone who does cause a disturbance on a plane, or in an airport, can cause a huge problem for lots of other people, and they have no right to do so. A few months ago I was flying out of DC when they shut down the whole airport because some asshole, who was late for a flight, decided to skip past the security line. A security breach at National airport means a major headache for everyone there. I, and many others, got out 2 hours late. I missed my connecting flight and had to spend another night in a hotel. So while one might sympathize with someone who has a phobia, such a person has no right to cause a problem for others.

59. these days, the stress of flying could perturb even a "normal" person!
Constant terror alerts, long delays and uncertainty, uncomfortable cabin conditions (the stuffiness caused by the airlines having turned down the ventilation to save fuel can bring on hypoxia, which can cause anxiety attacks) ...

If someone has a borderline psychological condition (and may not even be aware of it), extreme situations can exacerbate things. Several years ago, the woman next to me had a fit -- I was able to hold her hand while she wept -- she kept saying that she didn't know what was happening, because she hadn't had fear of flying before. (One epidemiologist I work with suspects that "sick building syndrome" caused by stale or contaminated air, of the type one often finds in airliners, may actually be triggering what looks like claustrophobia but isn't.)

One of my co-workers, who is about the same age as the woman in the news item, is a diabetic -- and partly as a result of an insulin low, she did have a panic attack en route to England last year. So that also might be a factor in this case. (My friend normally carries juice, which might not be possible from now on, even with a doctor's note, since it's not actually a "medication".)

31. OK, claustro. passenger causing a stir. But why massive bag inspection?

Thats the CNN pic of what authorities are doing on the tarmac ... inspecting everyone's luggage from that flight. Because of a claustrophobic passenger who went a little nuts? Who had NO screwdriver, al-Qaeda writings, vaseline or anything (early statements were incorrect).

The B.S. is getting deeper and deeeeeper! Wow.
