Former SOCom colonel gets 15 months

TAMPA -- Tom Spellissy must serve 15 months in prison for a conspiracy involving government contracts at Special Operations Command, a federal judge ruled Monday.

U.S. District Judge James Whittemore, who last month threw out the bulk of the case against Spellissy, appeared to struggle with the decision. He weighed his options for more than an hour and frequently noted Spellissy's sterling character and 29-year military career.

Whittemore also noted Spellissy's wife was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer and he has two young children.

But in the end, Whittemore said he had no choice but to sentence Spellissy to prison.

"Probation is simply not appropriate for this kind of offense."

Wow, someone might actually get to serve some time for being corrupt. Who woulda thunk it.

3. What is "sterling" about his career?
Bribery and corruption are not marks of a sterling career in my book, but I'm really not known for having a proper military mindset. This guy took bribes and committed wire fraud, hurting his own military's readiness capability in order to enrich himself personally.

Sorry about his wife and kids, but lots of families have bade good-bye to their fathers permanently in the last 3½ years, if you catch my meaning. And this guy was lining his own pocket with their blood.
