Obrador changes tack to call for votes to be ditched

By Mark Stevenson in Mexico City
Published: 14 August 2006

Amid signs that a partial recount won't change enough votes to make him president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador unveiled a new victory strategy: he wants the court to throw out results from nearly 5,000 polling places.

"Annulling from these polling places would change the balance of the election, and would mean that Mr Lopez Obrador would be the winner," said Claudia Sheinbaum, the candidate's aide. She said the request will be filed to the Federal Electoral Tribunal, which is overseeing the partial recount and must resolve all challenges to the July 2 elections by the end of August.

Parties involved in the recount say elections officials have found extra ballots in some ballot boxes, and, in other cases, have failed to account for all blank ballots. Ms Sheinbaum said this suggests "a concerted operation" to distort the vote count in favor of the conservative Felipe Calderon, who led by less than 1 percent in the official but still uncertified vote count. "These criminals thought it was going to be easy, 'We took his victory away and he's going to cross his arms and do nothing'," said Mr Lopez Obrador said. "Well, no, I'm not going to just wait with my arms crossed."

Representatives of Mr Calderon's National Action Party insisted that no major problems or variations in the vote have surfaced with more than 75 per cent of the count completed.

1. FULL hand-recount is what's needed.. If it proves he lost, then so be it
To selectively recount does NO good..

Gees louise.. it;'s worth the peace of mind for everyone to know for sure who really won.. You would think the other guy would want a clear victory too

6. "You would think the other guy would want a clear victory too." Not true
if they know that a "clear victory" is NOT possible.

Take our situation, for instance. I have often asked, what is the purpose of creating a deliberately non-transparent voting system, run on TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by Bushite corporations, with virtually no audit/recount controls?

This is the system put in place nationwide in the U.S. during the 2002-2204 period, with a $4 billion electronic voting boondoggle from the Anthrax Congress (engineered by the biggest crooks in Congress, Tom Delay and Bob Ney--who, for instance, specifically blocked a voting "paper trail" provision from getting out of committee).

Transparent elections are a no-brainer. People vote, and you count the votes in public view.

Why deliberately make it non-transparent?

Really, there is no other reason to have secret vote counting except that you cannot win any other way.

There is no reason for Calderon to oppose a full recount as Lopez Obrador requested (as opposed to 9%), except that Calderon only wins by their NOT being a full recount--i.e., he knows he didn't win. And, given that Calderon's brother apparently had an interest in the central electronic vote tabulation system, one suspects that many of the ballot boxes were stuffed (or emptied) and fraud occurred in the reporting and electronic tabulation.

7. He's doing well. His primary goal is to get all the ballots counted. (nt)
