Kennedy calls Cheney’s attack on Lamont “ugly and frightening”
By Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy is charging back at the vice president for his remarks on the Connecticut Senate race.

...

In an opinion piece in the Hartford Courant’s Sunday edition, Kennedy said Cheney went “too far” in his swipe against Lamont. He said the vice president’s words were ugly and frightening.

Lamont said in an interview with the Associated Press that he was surprised by Cheney’s comments and attributed them to partisan politicking.

Cheney’s spokeswoman said Lamont was the one seeking to score political points with the war.

We REALLY need to hit back. Glad Ted's doing so. We need MUCH more of it, though.

This is pretty much covered in Dean's Conservatives without Conscience. Cheney's "Connecticut voters support terrorists" is to induce fear of those crazy Nutmeg staters. The use of fear to control is a characteristic of Cheney and the rest of the nuts in power is an Authoritarian personality trait. Do yourself a favor -- get the book!

29. I might just do that. But I'm sure it will only confirm what I have
seen and heard already. Cheney has been playing like this since the first time I saw him on TV, back in the 80s. He makes me sick. He is a sad excuse for a highly organized carbon mass. Anyone who gives his thoughts any credence needs to be locked up with him.

2. As if having utter incompetents as President and V.P. doesn't embolden
the terraists. Those two clowns are far to interested in lining the pockets of their friends to deal with things like world peace or terrorism.

5. Good for Kennedy - we need to speak out about this
The Democrats need to start expressing disgust and disbelief with this outrageous statements that spew from the White House on a regular basis.

Can anyone imagine the reaction if Al Gore as VP had said something like this about the winner of a Republican primary? Stop and imagine the outrage that would have ensued.

11. Here Is Kennedy's Piece
Vice presidents are notorious for serving as an administration's chief attack dog, and time and again Dick Cheney has been unleashed to accuse anyone who is opposed to the Bush administration of aiding the terrorists. But this time he has gone too far.

The comments he made on the result of the Connecticut Democratic primary - that it might encourage "the al-Qaida types" who want to "break the will of the American people in terms of our ability to stay in the fight and complete the task" - are an attack not just on Democrats, but on democracy itself.

What happened in Connecticut is in fact a model for democracies everywhere. The people of the state heard a vigorous debate between two competing visions of how to protect this country. Young citizens became deeply involved, and turnout was high. The primary reminded us of the miracle of our democracy, in which the nation is ruled by its people - not by any entrenched set of leaders. There are few better messages we could send the world in these troubled times.

Cheney's comments about the election were ugly and frightening. They show once again that he and his party will stop at nothing to wrap Republicans in the flag and to insinuate that anyone who votes against them is giving aid and comfort to the terrorists. It's obvious that this administration lacks basic respect for our fundamental freedoms.

16. Well, Cheney IS ugly and frightening, and he could care less.
Don't get me wrong...I applaud Senator Kennedy for calling Evil Dick out on this one, but it's not the first time this kind of thing has happened, and it certainly won't be the last. Only one thing will bring this to an end.

2008.

18. True.
I was thinking "worst case scenario"...Bush, Cheney, Rove & Co. dodge every legal bullet and smirk their way through the rest of their term.

I'd much rather see things fall into place in November 2006, though.

26. "Cheney’s spokeswoman said ...
...Lamont was the one seeking to score political points with the war." well, duh!

that's what running for office is all about--scoring political points. you score enough points and you win, then you get to make the decisions. the difference is "scoring points" with truth versus lies.

basically, they're saying lamont can't have an opinion on the war that doesn't agree with the administration's. otherwise, he can be accused of being "political". but it's all political!

they're also confusing, once again, the "war on terror" with the "wars of terror".

34. Interestingly Kennedy's actual quote is missing from the story
They give free ink to Lieberman and Cheney but can't even allow a complete sentence in rebuttal.

Also they make Kennedy seem kind of whiney and whimpy by focusing on the "ugly" and "frightening" part of whatever he may have said. Must be nice to own the "liberal" media.
