For 52 weeks, group firmly in corner of peace
August 13, 2006

BOCA RATON — There were metal heads, gray heads, bald heads and even furry heads among the 50 or so protesters Saturday afternoon on the corner of Glades Road and St. Andrews Boulevard in Boca Raton.

They have gathered each week protesting the war in Iraq to the supportive honks of passing cars and the occasional obscene gesture.

Saturday marked a milestone for the group, which calls itself Boca Peace Corner. Members have kept up the momentum for 52 weeks.

Much of the credit is being given to Jill Liberto, a Boca Raton housewife, a self-described former "pantyhose and pump, suit-wearing office person." The one-time paralegal says she simply got sick of yelling at the television every time she saw another story about the war.

It was around year ago, about the same time Liberto heard about a vigil to honor antiwar protester Cindy Sheehan, whose son was killed in Iraq. From there, she gathered e-mail addresses of about 100 people. She sent invitations to come to the corner on Saturday and, to her surprise, they started to show up.

thank you for posting it. We have a local peace group here that does the same thing. It is rare to actually see a story about these folks.

Go Peaceniks!

3. keep it up!!!
In Laramie, Wyoming, we've been on the street corner every Friday afternoon for 1/2 a hour since January 2003. And we're there whether it's raining or bitterly cold or fryingly hot. There may be only one of us or there may be 25. But we're there and we're an institution now and lots and lots of people start honking for peace before they even get to the corner because they know we will be waiting.

Get out and do this in your town. It may seem intimidating at first but it's easy! And people really appreciate your being there and the chance it gives them to express their feelings. Try it. You'll like it. And if there is no group, don't wait for someone else to start it up. Make a sign, grab a friend, and do it!!
