Former Illinois Governor to be Deposed About Death Row Pardons
CHICAGO (AP) -- Former Gov. George Ryan must explain in court why he pardoned four death row inmates who are now suing a group of Chicago police officers. U.S. Magistrate Judge Geraldine Soat Brown ordered Ryan to sit for depositions before September 30.

Ryan, who used his pardon and commutation powers to empty death row before he left office in 2003, objected to the subpoena and claimed "executive privilege."

(He went on Oprah's show and talked about the pardons, so the Judge figures the executive privilege doesn't apply.)

2. Ryan didn't do this because he had grave doubts.....
...about the machinery of capital punishment in Illinois?
During one period in Illinois, more prisoners on death row were exonerated than were executed. Wasn't there some small portion of Ryan's heart that feared executing an innocent prisoner?
(deep sympathy on your loss. I mean that.)

7. There is a connection with Ryan's pardons and the indictments that should
have been called against police in Chicago for torturing confessions out of black male prisoners. But, guess what? The police won't be punished for what they did because the statue of limitations on the crime has run out.
