Israel confirms chopper down
AN Israeli army spokeswoman has confirmed that a helicopter had been shot down over southern Lebanon overnight, without providing details on casualties.

Hezbollah guerrillas claimed to have earlier shot down the helicopter in south Lebanon, with Lebanese security sources and Hezbollah making their announcement.

The Israeli army had no comment to make on the initial report.

The helicopter was shot down in the southern village of Yater, Hizbollah's al-Manar television and the security source said.

2. Must be Bill Clinton's fault
for not using nuclear weapons in the Middle East when he had the chance. He's soft on terror and weak on defense.

6. The support is not in terms of dollars
The US military complex is making a mint off of your nation.
Ever wonder about that? That you live in a state of fear so that Raytheon et al. may make a tidy profit?

7. So why do the Congressional reports call it Military Grants?
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article14083.htm
And telling someone who doesn't approve of military spending on imperialism to leave "my country" is a very neocon statement.

but....i'm for reproductive rights, separation of church and state, against the iraq war, pro gay rights, for additional money for housing, education and a single payer medical system, anti-outsourcing,pro-israel, for higher corporate taxes, more restrictions on mergers. OK.

if you say i'm a neo-con....so be it.

13. See, this is the fundamental problem with american politics these days.
If you punch the issues card, you can expect a free pass concerning far graver issues.

18. Yes.
At this point I feel a *bit* more concerned over unilateral war perpetrated on innocents.
That trumps veganism in terms of immediacy.

tell that to americans who are on the verge of bankruptcy, who disagree with the iraq war, who don't have medical care, reproductive rights, or jobs.

your vegan comment was just snarky.

I am a first class snark. But it's only directed at people that are headed in the wrong direction.
But go up by a few posts, and examine your own remarks.

25. i don't know what the meaning of neocon is...
i'm very liberal on every issue with the exception of combatting terror and the defense of israel.
i was against going into iraq. am i a neocon? if this is any help...i am a jewish woman who graduated from one of those "elite" private universities.

i really need an answer, i don't consider myself a neocon but maybe i'm not looking at the ahem broad picture.

22. katinmn gave a link disputing your claim
the link shows that military aid is separate from loan guarantees, which is lumped into economic aid, which also includes grants.

Do you have a link supporting your above claim?

21. It looks like we give Israel both
the outright aid AND the loans

# Since 1987, the US congress has annually been approving a foreign aid bill totaling an average of $3 billion of American taxpayers' money to Israel, $1.2 billion in economical aid, and $1.8 billion in military aid.

# After the gulf war in 1991, the US has additionally been offering Israel $2 billion annually in federal loan guarantees, which brings the total US foreign aid to Israel to about $5 billion.

7 IDF dead, 60 wounded so badly they had to be medevac to Haifa, and that's only today.

This morning MSNBC showed a video of one IDF tank laying a smoke cover as it fled as two IDF tanks were in flames, apparently hit by new Chinese-made anti-tank rockets. Hezbollah is claiming that it destroyed 6 IDF tanks today.

May have been a mistake cuz bottom of the screen still says 100 wounded

Seems such a waste

ON edit: it appears 100 dead since the begining of fighting.

Still a wsste, I guess except for those that don't have to be on the front line.

28. It is total carnage
Dozens of soldiers were hurt during the fighting in Lebanon on Saturday. At least 23 of them were taken to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for treatment.

None of the soldiers killed on Saturday were reservists.

An IDF spokeswoman said an IDF officer and two soldiers were killed when Hezbollah fighters fired an anti-tank missile at their tank.

She said another soldier died when Hezbollah launched a similar attack on a structure in the area where he and other troops had taken position.

Two soldiers from the Golani Brigade were killed in an accident that occured when an IDF tank accidentally ran them over in the village of Shakif-al-Amal in the East. Two other soldiers were wounded in the accident, one seriously and the other lightly.

In the eastern section, one soldier was killed when an anti-tank missile hit his tank close to the village of Kanatra. Another soldier was killed when troops exchanged fire near the village of Hadata on the eastern section.

30. Asymmetric
This new talent for asymmetric warfare combined with the latest generation of *tools* supplied by China and Russia will spell doom for the conventional frontal attack methods used by Israel and the US. The Muslims have overcome their "can't win" image and now have their pride returned. Israel will rue the day they invaded Lebanon. It's a whole new game in the ME. Thank god. Bob

27. 11 IDF soldiers killed Saturday in south Lebanon (Ha'aretz)

Hezbollah shoots down IAF helicopter deep inside Lebanon

11 IDF soldiers killed Saturday in south Lebanon

By Amos Harel, Yoav Stern and Eli Ashkenazi, Haaretz Correspondents, and Agencies

Eleven Israel Defense Forces soldiers were killed and another 11 seriously wounded in heavy clashes Saturday with Hezbollah forces in south Lebanon, after Israel dramatically expanded its ground operation in the area.

In a separate incident, an Israel Air Force helicopter was shot down by Hezbollah fire on Saturday night. Hezbollah claimed the helicopter was struck by an anti-tank missile. IDF sources confirmed a helicopter had gone down. The sources said there were no combat soldiers aboard, but added that there had been casualties.

Under cover of intense artillery fire, IDF forces reached the Litani River, which is some 20 to 30 kilometers inside Lebanon, military officials said Saturday evening.

As part of the expanded operation, IAF helicopters dropped a large number of Israeli troops deep inside Lebanese territory on Saturday, in the largest operation of its kind since 1973.

IDF troops were engaged in heavy exchanges of fire with Hezbollah, as forces thrust northward to the Litani River under cover of intense artillery fire. Military officials said that at least 40 Hezbollah fighters had been killed in clashes on Saturday.

31. Those anti-tank missiles must be something
I bet the Chinese arms industry (assuming they are Chinese made, as I have read upthread) got a big boost from this war. At least somebody benefited from the latest folly.
