LEXINGTON, N.C. — A former jailer was sentenced Friday to more than a year behind bars after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of an inmate.
Ronald Parker, 44, was sentenced to 13 to 16 months for his role in the Jan. 7 death of Carlos Claros Castro. Jurors returned their verdict after nearly five hours of deliberations.
Parker broke down when Judge Ed Wilson asked him if had anything to say. He said he was "sorry for the loss of Mr. Castro."
Claros, 28, was in jail on allegations of driving while impaired when Parker and another jailer, Brandon Huie, were called to his cell because Claros refused to give up a mop handle that he was using as a weapon. Claros died after a fight with the jailers.
An autopsy that concluded the death was a homicide cited bruises, bleeding in the brain and neck, wounds from a Taser gun and evidence of asphyxiation.

The two former detention officers accused of beating an inmate to death in the Davidson County Jail were both on the witness stand yesterday.
But only one would offer any testimony.
Ronald Eugene Parker, 44, is on trial this week on a charge of a second-degree murder in the death of Carlos Claros Castro, 28, a Honduran immigrant who had been arrested on allegations of driving while impaired.
