Pilot Pokes Fun At Heightened Airport Security

Last Updated:
08-11-06 at 10:33AM

A pilot's stunt in the skies above Lindbergh Field is being called a sick joke.

A close look at the sky reveals the word "boo!"

A passenger waiting at the long lines outside Terminal 1 first thought the pilot spelled 3,001. He said the joke was in poor taste considering the terror alert.

(snip)

A harbor police officer told News 8 the FBI is looking into the matter.

16. I'm wondering the same thing.
I live in the city and know the area. I don't see how a pilot could linger overhead long enough to do any sky writing at all anywhere near the restricted flight area. It just does not seem possible.

Clarification should be interesting....

7. What the fuck is there to "investigate?"
Why waste precious resources investigating some dumbass stunt? Is anyone thinking for a split second that terrorists were sky writing BOO over US airports? Have we completely lost our ever-lovin' minds?

SURRENDER DOROTHY!

21. This is a hoax
Unless this is a complete uncontrolled airport no one can sky write over an airport. Good way to kill yourself or someone in the pattern.

26. Was it 'BOO!' written in sky, or just '3001'
Was it 'BOO!' written in sky, or just '3001'

UNION-TRIBUNE

August 12, 2006

Could a skywriting plane have made an editorial comment in San Diego skies in the wake of the latest terrorism scare?

At 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Mission Hills resident Alijandra Mogilner looked out toward Lindbergh Field and saw a small plane writing the word “BOO!” “I can't help but think it is in response to the U.K. incidents,” says Mogilner, who notes that some of her neighbors also noticed the writing. “It also shows that we're still vulnerable.”

A check with the FAA confirmed the skywriting incident. However, a spokeswoman concluded that it didn't constitute a violation in the Federal Aviation Administration's eyes because the pilot was in contact with air traffic control and the writing occurred at 9,500 feet and outside protected airspace above Lindbergh.

The message may not have been “BOO!” anyway, but rather “3001,” says FAA spokeswoman Holly Baker. The writing supposedly was in connection with a conference at the San Diego Convention Center. That couldn't be confirmed, but the Web site of a Virginia aerial surveying company called 3001 Inc. said it was listed as attendingthe annual convention of a global mapping company called ESRI in San Diego this week.
