11. Wait a while and many airlines are going to tank. Future's not in the air

Two words: Peak Oil.

Four words: Peak Oil and Airline security.

There will come a time in the not too distant future when travel will once again be only for the wealthy and powerful.

Fuel costs will not go down but keep rising. The discomfort factor of flying will continue to increase as passengers are forces to leave even their clothing behind and wear paper coveralls to fly, packed in like cattle.

Personally, I will no longer fly commercial unless there's a death in the family and I'm the one in the box in the cargo hold. Let's face the facts that airlines are corporations and the one responsibility of corporations is to show a profit. This has been done in the past by slacking on maintenance costs, and that was in the times of easy money for airlines. I don't trust them to spend enough to properly maintain their equipment when times are tough. Call me paranoid, but just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I believe that we are facing a turning point in our society that will determine whether it will survive and flourish or degenerate into tribal warfare. Alternative energies are and will continue to be improved and hybrid vehicle will become more efficient.

As I've said before in these forums, passenger air travel is the most fuel inefficient means of transportation. Most of it's energy goes not to moving it horizontally, but to keep it from falling vertically, thereby sharply impacting the earth's surface - not encouraged for improving the travel pleasure of passengers.

In times of cheap energy all this did not matter. It really matters now.

I believe the future of transportation to be in hi-speed rail travel. It's far more energy efficient and far more comfortable for the passenger. The really unfortunate thing is that we had at least the beginnings of a start toward it with Amtrak. The airline lobby and their lackeys in congress made sure that it was no competition for the airlines, and now we will have to start almost from scratch.

Ah, well. We're Americans. We live, but we don't learn.

Or, as Winston Churchill said: You can always trust the Americans to do the right thing. After they've tried everything else.

16. Thanks for your reply
I have not been on a plane since before 9/11. And it's because I don't trust the airline safety nor the administration's sociopath machinations. Call me paranoid. :)

I also agree with your take on the future of travel in the US. We were just talking earlier around the house here about bus travel. Not as comfy as train but it's a little more versatile. And it's surely a decent choice for short distances.

I had a few Ameripasses when I was in my twenties. Traveling with friends for weeks around the states and Canada was a lot of fun. I may not be as comfortable on long overnight stretches now that I'm older . But I think I could handle it if we found lodging at night. I recall the buses having ample leg room and a comfortable ride. I enjoy stargazing at the scenery and the absence of responsibility behind the wheel. So I'm ready for going "back to the future". We have no choice but to adapt.

14. Hate Rove?
That's OK. I do to. He's a politician so dirty that only his mother would care about his fate - the rest, friend or foe, will cherish the day he moves to footnote-status.

In the meantime, please, please try not to judge every single piece of event through the prism of DC-politics. The world is bigger. Much bigger...

10. Typical Fox M.O.
The usual audience will see nothing but the headline and say, "see? see? terra! terra!"

I'm about to lose it over this latest assault (not the one by the terrorists, real or not) on freedom. Maybe I'm just overly hormonal today or something, but I really feel like something has tipped the balance of tolerance for me on this one.

Oh, and I found this bit (about one of the 24 arrested in the UK) buried in the Fox article particularly sad:

"Imtiaz Qadir, of the Waltham Forest Islamic Association, said one of the suspects was a woman in her 20s who had a 6-month old child. "They have taken the child too, because it needs to be with its mother," he said."

Something is really wrong here. :(

Oh, and hi, Betty! :hi:

17. Maybe just opportunistic propaganda?
"It was not immediately known if any of the 40 people arrested had any connection with the alleged plot uncovered by British police on Thursday to bomb passenger jets flying between Britain and the United States."

18. Additional details from Reuters
Italy arrests 40 in security swoop
By Massimiliano Di Giorgio

ROME (Reuters) - Italian police have arrested 40 people in a security swoop targeting Islamic groups following a foiled plot in Britain to blow up trans-atlantic airliners, the Interior Ministry said on Friday.

The ministry said in a statement the arrests were carried out throughout Italy "during a special operation that follows the British anti-terrorism operation yesterday".

A ministry source said those arrested were linked to Islamic groups, adding that none had been detained on terrorism-related charges.

Twenty-eight people were detained for violating rules on residency permits and 12 for property crimes.
