Israel bombs Beirut's southern suburbs

Beirut/Tel Aviv - Israeli jets resumed their air raids on Beirut's southern suburbs and northern Lebanon early Friday, carrying out at least 10 bombing runs.

The planes also attacked a bridge in Akkar, northern Lebanon, killing five people and wounding others, Lebanese police said.

The jets then raided a road leading to Arida, which is the main northern border with Syria and the only remaining passage between Lebanon and the outside world.

The Israeli army meanwhile announced that one soldier had been killed, and nine others wounded, in heavy fighting overnight between Israeli troops and Hezbollah guerrillas in south Lebanon.
