(Army) Reserves chief eyes mobilizing on five-year cycle
http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=39239

Once the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are over, Lt. Gen. Jack Stultz, chief of the Army Reserve, plans to keep reservists mobilized once every five years.

“I think that would be a great recruiting tool,” Stultz told Stars and Stripes in an Aug. 3 interview in his Pentagon office.

“What if I could tell you, as you’re coming out of high school, ‘Join the Army Reserve, and about every five years I’m going to send you somewhere in the world for a wonderful experience?’”

However, Stultz added, “Here’s where I’ll caveat that a little bit.” Instead of having a “wonderful experience” in a combat zone such as Iraq for 12 months, he said, “it might be to Hungary. It might be to Korea. This is a security cooperation-type exercise,” not a war.

<snip>

In the Army’s force generation model, “everybody gets to be a duck, and everybody gets to be an eagle,” Stultz said.

Yeah it will be just ducky trying to keep a good job on that schedule!

1. What the fuck is so wonderful about that?
"Join the Army Reserve, and about every five years I’m going to send you somewhere in the world for a wonderful experience?"

That is fucking sick. How about truth in advertising?? How about, join and for five years you'll get yer ass shot at and you'll be lucky to return home sane and in one piece??

7. Visit the lovely Teutoberg Woods...
the locals are very "friendly." Not. Amazing how much could be learned by studying history.

6. Reserve model simulates the corporate use of part time and...
...independent contractor employees. During peace time they get minimal to no benefits from belonging. During wartime they carry the lion share of the burden. Sounds fair, doesn't it?

8. Did any of you remember seeing Private Benjamin....
Sargent, I didn't join THIS Army. I joined the one with the waterfront condos...these bedroom windows don't even have curtains.

I served (USAR) and have recommended it to kids in the past....but as long as they continue to misuse airmen and sailors as ground troops, renige on contracts, and wrongfully stop loss those that have fufilled their obligation-I will do everything in my powers to dissuade young folks.

If they thing they have recruiting problems now...you ain't seen nutin yet. Rummy and his 'plans' have done permanent damage to our Reservists.
