US Democrats say plot shows Iraq war a diversion

WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Prominent Democrats said on Thursday a foiled plot in Britain to blow up U.S.-bound planes showed the Bush administration's pursuit of war in Iraq had diverted resources from the bigger threat of terrorism and made the danger worse.

...

"Five years after 9-11, it is clear that our misguided policies are making America more hated in the world and making the war on terrorism harder to win," Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts said.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Bush and Congress needed to change course in Iraq and ensure Americans are protected around the world.

"The Iraq war has diverted our focus and more than $300 billion in resources from the war on terrorism and has created a rallying cry for international terrorists," Reid said.

4. Not everything that happens is a grand political scheme
Neither party should be politicizing this event, all it's doing is further keeping this fallacious "war on terror" going for the ideologues that are keeping such an awful fear and war alive.

5. I think the war on terror should keep going
regardless of which party is power. The focus and the strategy need to change darastically of course. I am in favor of more covert ops or cloak and dagger approach. Osama can avoid an army, but he cant avoid a spy sitting next to him.

7. What is the "War on Terror" ; defending against terrorism?
Isn't that what we should be doing all the time? It isn't some era or "war"; it's routine security that we've been doing since the founding of the nation.

8. I disagree slightly
this is an era of intensified efforts against us. The word war is probably a bad choice, but i would like see an agressive offensive stance against terrorist organizations. But not by invading countries and using our armed forces.

10. I don't believe in the whole sham
What we are doing creates the terror to feed the cycle; there doesn't need to be any "war on terror" except to seek the agendas of those who lead the country, which are ulterior to terror. We just need normal police and international operations to stop violence against us, like we always have.

The word "terror" should be wiped out of the everyday headlines. We should act normal and let the police handle things, stop politicizing something that is insane to politicize.

19. osama's dead
he died before 911 happened (obviously)...the main terror threat against anyone is the fascists -they have no choice but to seize total power, to '1984' history, and to defy reality if it threatens to expose them; therefore a sensible course would be to beware them killers, but.....not only does the bare ass's (emperor bush) pigmedia tell the people what they think, but it tells them what they think they think they think they think they think they think they think.....

11. How many billion $ could we've spent fighting terrorists if the idiot
and his neo-con buddies wouldn't have invaded Iraq? - A COUNTRY THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11 OR AL QAEDA, AND WAS NOT A THREAT TO US!!!

Bush's failure to focus on the real threat - TERRORISM - has endangered us more than ever. He should be impeached for that.

39. Not only that, but
what could we have accomplished in Afghanistan with just half of the troops we have in Iraq?

I doubt that the Taliban would be making a comeback, Osama would be dead or captured, security could be strengthened throughout the country, not just in Kabul.

43. Exactly. And, by going to Iraq, they've created more anger against us
and creating terrorists faster than they can kill them.

THEY didn't prevent 9/11, THEY didn't hunt down Osama and al Qaeda, THEY created more terrorists through their incompetence and actions.

20. Aw, it's all crap. That's how I'm feeling. I mean, it's good to hear our
Party leaders at least bringing some reasonableness to the discussion. But if we faced with world with peace and justice in our hearts, and "truth and reconciliation," stateless "terrorist" groups would be a minor police problem.

Arms dealers are leading everybody around the by nose. It's all war profiteering and preserving and forging markets, and grabbing resources, for US-based global corporate predators.

The injustices that we have committed against Middle Eastern peoples have been ENORMOUS. They go way back. They go back to 1954, for instance, and our deliberate destruction of Iranian democracy, and installation of the horrible Shah of Iran, who inflicted 25 years of torture and oppression on the Iranian people. Is it any wonder the Iranian people hate us and hate Israel--and are easily whipped up? WE drove them into the arms of the mullahs. They were once--and to some extent still are--the greatest hope for an open-minded, progressive Islamic society near the borders of Israel. And what did we do? We SMASHED it! And now we're planning to SMASH IT AGAIN!

WHO are we allied with, over there? WHO? The fatcat Saudi and Kuwaiti "princes"--the most undemocratic leaders on the face of the earth! WE supported Saddam Hussein and sold him horrid bio/chem weapons to use against the Iranians! DONALD RUMSFELD did that! And who does Bush hold hands with? Prince Bandar!

WHO created Al Qaeda? Who funded Osama bin Laden? US! US! The Bush-I CIA!

And the purpose of these policies is to DENY POOR MIDDLE EASTERN PEOPLES the rightful profit from THEIR oil reserves, and to stunt their development as progressive societies.

We need more than reason in this situation. We need more than Democrats "doing a better war than Bush." We need WISDOM, HONESTY, TRUTH and RECONCILIATION.

Or we are going down. Our democracy is already hanging by a thread. They've bankrupted us--the most prosperous nation on earth--for their corporate oil war. They peddle bigotry and fear. They play to the stupidest, more manipulable minority, and trumpet their views through the collusive corporate media. And God knows the depths they've gone to, to gain power over our treasury and over the biggest war machine ever created by humankind.

The "war on terror" is a goddamned, trumped up, dirty, stinking LIE! And I hate to see Democrats buy into the language of this monstrous deceit. "The war on terror." WE are the "terrorists"! WE have slaughtered more innocent people than all the "terrorist" cells combined. ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND innocent Iraqis slaughtered in the initial bombing alone--according to the British doctors' report--but even if it was "only" ten thousand, we've beaten the "terrorists" of 9/11 (whoever they were) several times over.

And not one of them a "terrorist." Not one. Children. Babies. Mothers. Elderly people. And the pathetic defenders of Iraqi sovereignty. None were "terrorists." None!

No, the thing we have to address is what drives a young man to veil his wife and glory in his dominance over her, and to hate Israel, and, by extension, us--and want to kill us all?

What have we done to him to drive him into this psychological position--so that he is fodder for mullahs and "terrorist" schemes?

We've stolen his land, time and again. We've stolen his resources. We've made him eat dirt. We've tortured his friends. We've killed family members. We've smashed his hopes and dreams for a dignified, meaningful life. We've supported all those who exploit and impoverish him. And we've armed those who would use him to their own purpose for petty power. We've furthermore stirred up bigotry against him for his race and religion. We've let our war profiteering corporate news monopolies so dumb down our people that most of them don't even know that Iranians are not Arabs. We've messed with these countries, and cultures, and societies to the nth degree, for untold centuries with some of the worst offenses recently.

And what we need to overcome all of this is WISDOM, HONESTY, TRUTH and RECONCILIATION.

I use the "we" rhetorically. It is not really "we"--the American people--who have done all this. Nor the Israeli people, for that matter. They have their own set of problems, different from ours (great fear, vulnerability, rampant militarism and war profiteering all around them, for decades--they can hardly form a vision of peace anymore, and, if they could, I'm sure they would want it; but no one offers them a peaceful solution; all such solutions are sabotaged, so they are stuck in a permanent war zone.)

"WE" want peace and justice, like everyone else on earth. But our latent war machine and our wealth made us targets for a fascist coup. And the growth of the war machine and corporate rule--things that we are, to some extent, responsible for--over the last several decades, made conditions ripe for the Bush junta takeover. We have "benefited" from the wealth and the oil greed that has driven our foreign policy (if you consider clogged freeways and smoggy cities a "benefit"). But we benefit no more. Now the asswipes are impoverishing US. And the lies and dishonesty are thicker than ever before.

Time for WISDOM, HONESTY, TRUTH and RECONCILIATION--or we may lose more than our democracy; we may see the end of the entire human race, from the impacts of global warming, and/or from a limited nuclear exchange in the Middle East, birthplace of all our religions, that will destroy the planet's atmosphere, and, soon after, its biosphere. (Read Carl Sagan's "The Cold and the Dark.")

Terrorist cells are not the problem. These are--and always have been--EASILY SOLVED. Those who rule over are the problem, and our seeming inability to curtail their great injustices toward others, and even toward ourselves.

Their latest mechanism of control is our election system, which is now run by Bushite corporations using TRADE SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code to "tabulate" all our votes, in the new electronic voting systems installed in 2002-2004. We could start there with a bit of wisdom. Throw all these highly riggable voting machines out! Out, out, OUT! All of them. And throw all private corporations out of our election system NOW!

Then we won't have just a few people--like the good Senator Kennedy--calling for reasonableness in the debate. We will have him and other wise people IN CHARGE, as it was supposed to be, in our democracy.

23. Great post. Well thought out. We need to understand why
people want to engage in terrorism and try change their ways of thinking this way. We need to be more understanding of other peoples' cultures and plights in life.

I'm really sick of hearing "God Bless America", although I want that; but I want God to bless all of the earth. We are not the only people on this earth, but many people in this country believe that we are the only people who matter.

29. Imagine Jimmy Carter's
response to 9/11. A true look into our role in the miseries of the average middle easterner's lives, an attempt to remedy them, along with a concentrated and unified effort to prosecute the criminals that killed 3000 folks in New York. A sane approach would be refreshing.

Over and over and over until it becomes "the truth". It's simple and catchy and middle America believes it's true, so therefore, it is! Jimmy Carter's sanity would quickly be dismissed as wimpy.

31. INVADING IRAQ WOULD NOT PREVENT AIRLINE PLOTS
Dems need to say it over and over again. Pouring more soldiers and money into Iraq would have done NADA NOTHING to prevent the 9/11 or today's airplane attack!!! Wasting lives and effort in Iraq does nothing to protect us here at home!!! How many of our ports are still insecure and cargo unchecked because the Repukes want to see a profit??? The Iraqi war does NOTHING to stop airplane hijackings!

If anything, today's events HIGHLIGHT Bush's failed war on Iraqis and his idiotic policies!!!

C'mon Dems!!!! Keep fighting!!!

35. Generally, news in the UK comes equipped with photos, names etc..
I mean is this a hoax or what?

For instance, the cure for carry on liquids is to pack them in your luggage, if you want to keep them.
Funny thing though, there is NO screening for explosives packed in cargo stored in the underbelly of the plane.

How is this simple remedy a viable solution to protecting airline passengers?

Is there an explanation I've missed here? If there is, would someone be so kind and to enlighten me.
