BEIJING (AP) - The most powerful typhoon to hit China in five decades raged across its southeastern coast Thursday, capsizing ships and destroying homes after 1.5 million people evacuated. At least two people were killed and dozens were injured.

Nineteen people were reported missing across the region, and Typhoon Saomai was also blamed for at least two deaths in the Philippines a day earlier.

A man walks by billboards blown down by strong winds as Typhoon Saomai whips Cangnan county in east China's Zhejiang province, Thursday Aug. 10, 2006. Typhoon Saomai, the most powerful storm to hit China in decades slammed into the country's southeast coast Thursday after more than 1.3 million people were evacuated, the government's main news agency reported.(AP Photo)

Torrential rains were forecast in the next three days as the typhoon churned inland across crowded areas where Tropical Storm Bilis killed more than 600 people last month.

Saomai, with winds up to 135 mph, made landfall at the town of Mazhan in coastal Zhejiang province and was moving northwest at 12 mph, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing weather officials.

5. do not know but these storms are getting intolerable
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 09:47 PM by pitohui
i don't know why a planet of going on 7 billion people must tolerate these stupid storms, is there no way to figure out some technology for turning these storms?

i'm tired of being a sitting duck, i don't have the knowledge to work on such a project, but i'd contribute $$$ or whatever and i'd support any gov't (well any legitimate gov't, not a north korea or like that) willing to fund scientists into working on such a project

is this really that impossible? the alternative just seems like endless evacuations of millions of people on a repeated basis, since hurricanes/typhoons come routinely every year and the population of coastal regions can only get larger

i know cloud seeding didn't work in betsey, but crap, have we really learned nothing we can try after 40 years?

hell i don't even think we could send a man to the moon when betsey hit, we didn't have home computer, a cell phone would be "dick tracy" -- it was a different world -- and yet we've done nothing to fight these intolerable killer storms
